I help to run a regular night at the fleapit (The Young Offenders Institute - beer, music and ping pong on the last Friday of every month) and, having seen some of the negative reviews below, thought I would pitch in here.Having dealt with the management of the fleapit regularly for about a year, I can confidently say they have been fair and friendly with us that whole time. Paul has often helped us carry a table tennis table in and out of the venue and generally goes out of his way to help get things just right for us. He gave us a chance when we pitched the idea of our night to him, and has been really supportive ever since. We've seen customers at our nights give the management a hard time, and Paul has coped pretty well with all sorts, from people sneaking their own drinks in to the occasional difficult drunk at the end of the evening. I have never seen anyone get a rough deal there, so I suspect the negative reviews below are sour grapes. I hope this offers some balance and perspective, as I wouldn't want anyone to be put off giving the fleapit a chance.

Having been regular at the fleapit from its early days, i have watched it grow from strength to strength. The atmosphere is relaxed and, unlike other haunts in the area, conducive to meeting friends for a chat 'n' chew.I have always found both management and employees helpful and willing to assist whenever possible.I am suprised to hear that someone has an unfavourable experience; having read reviews in notable periodicals, I am more than happy to continue my patronage of the fleapit and to watch this independently owned an run business continue to thrive, giving a home a home away from home to creatives likes myself.continued success!

My experience of the staff at the Flea Pit means I'm not surprised they watch sites like this, ready to fight back at customers' criticisms, rather than taking it constructively and trying to improve.

Quite simply if the criticism is unfounded then of course we will take the time to reply (if individual email addresses were posted we would reply individually). These aren't constructive criticisms, they're just vengeful and say more about the individual than what The FleaPit offers. We are NEVER rude for the sake of it, what's the point of opening a business to do that? Not to mention it would be counterproductive. However, if people are rude to us or give us cause to be assertive (note the difference with being rude), then we do what we need to make sure that things run the way they should. We're not going to take abuse from customers just because they are a customer. We're going to stand up for what we do and not let ourselves be bullied. If someone sneaks in a dog then we will insist that they remove it as we don't allow dogs, if they refuse then we have to keep insisting at the risk of being considered rude. If someone takes a drink outside and we alert them to the fact that we don't allow that and they insist on staying outside with the drink anyways then we have to insist they bring it in at the risk of being considered rude. If someone refuses to pay what they have agreed to pay then it is within our right to deal with that in our way. Nothing we ever say or do is ever UNPROVOKED, people should take a good look at their actions and understand why they've had the particular experience they've had. As stated below there's a very specific reason why at least 2 of the reviews are there, and we can guarantee an explanation for any aggressive and unconstructive review that appears. Again, there have been thousands of happy customers over the years, and we know that because they come again and again and we are running strong.By the way, we're not watching this site, it just happens that we get an email alert when something is posted. - Report

The 2 people who have reviewed directly below were part of a group of who had agreed to pay a minimum bar spend and have exclusive use of the venue. When 50% of the guests didn't turn up and they were asked to pay the difference to make up the minimum bar spend at the end of the night, as previously agreed, they got upset and tried to get out of it.
The reviews are written out of spite and based soley on the fact that they wanted to back out of an agreement and not on any wrongdoing on the manager and staff's part.
The FleaPit is a small independent operation with quality products and almost 4 years worth of happy customers. The staff team always do their utmost to accommodate the needs of guests and event organisers.
Unfortunately some people will always try and take advantage of this and in doing so challenge everything The FleaPit represents.

My experience in the Flea Pit was not related to the Party you mention. The staff were un-friendly & a similar incident with a drink being taken out side innocently - resulted in the Manager calling my boyfriend a ******. The service is rude & the crap coffee over priced. I wouldn't go back, so many much friendlier & better establishments on Columbia Rd, minus the bad attitude! - Report

What you say is a contradiction in terms. If you took a drink outside 'innocently' or not, you still took it outside, and if the staff asked you to bring it back in it is for a reason. No one there has ever sworn at a customer, that would just be a ridiculous and unprofessional thing to do. The other side of the coin is if a staff member of an establishment appears rude or assertive with their requests, it is likely to be as a direct reaction to surliness on the part of the customer. People in the service industry are human and should be treated as such. Unfortunately not all customers realise this and think they are above everyone else. Again, we have had thousands of very happy customers over the years, and people usually comment on how much they enjoyed the coffee as they leave on a Sunday. If it is your opinion the coffee is not good fortunately there are 1000 times as many more people who do enjoy it and their time at The FleaPit. - Report

I have worked in the service industry for a number of years.. and never have been as rude as the staff are here. I think politeness goes a long way & our experience (there was a 5 of us who all heard him say that to my boyfriend) was poor all round.

I couldn't agree more with the reviews below. Surly and rude service, overpriced drinks (one beer tap which conveniently quickly runs dry so customers are forced to spend more on bottled lager). I didn't try the food so i can't comment on that, but considering the plethora of friendlier, comfier bars in the area who genuinely seem to want and care about your custom I can't see any possible reason why i would bother going to the fleapit again.

Possibly the worst bar I have ever been to. The flea pit offers an unwelcoming, cold atmosphere not helped my the sullen, sulky staff. You get the real sense from the manager that he would rather you weren't actually there - a friend of mine was actually told off by a member of staff for sitting on the arm of an arm chair...whilst I was chasticed by another member of staff for merely walking past the door way with a beer in hand accused of trying to take my drink outside. When I explained I happened to me merely walking past the door rather than apolgising for her error she retorted in a accusitory manner-'good because you're not allowed'. Add to this the unbearably slow service behind the bar - in my opinion the flea pit demonstates customer service at its absolute worst. Reading some of the other reviews I see I'm not alone in my disappointing experience and can only conclude that the manager does not want to encourage repeat business. An altogether unpleasent experience. I wouldn't recommend the flea pit to my worst enemy.

I would strongly reccomend NEVER going the the flea pit cafe! Why you may ask, is it the fact they serve a terrible cup of coffee (truley awful), but no that aside it is the stinking attitude of the staff in there that really ruins your day. In particular the Manager (I only know he is the mananger as everey sentence he uttered he liked to end with "I have been the manager for 3 years) - Maybe time for a career change!
Don't believe me?, it speaks volumes, on a SUnday on the tremendously busy Columbia Rd flower market, you could barley get into any other establishment to even buy a coffee, yet the flea pit was empty with a pick of any of the tables. Very unusual when everywhere else is rammed to bursting point. Well not unusual, as I can only guess that other patrons of Columbia rd have tried either the coffee, or had a taste of the managements terrible customer service!

Went in to buy a cup of tea, and apparently at £1.75 per cup, I also wan't able to pay with a £10 note. The staff attitude here stinks! Very surley - and over priced to boot. I went to the van next door, cup of tea for 80p and they accept £10 notes!

Actually, tea is £1.90 for a pot, and nor being able to give change for a £10 note was probably due to the fact that The FleaPit had been so busy that all the change was gone. - Report
