For what it is; the Gallery is an excellent small little Portuguese restaurant. First off, you can't possible guess that this is a restaurant behind the green "take away" look facade, but as soon as you step into the "back room" it takes you by surprise. Mosaic tiles, pleasantly painted walls, and the split-level that gives the restaurant its name. We had a very pleasant dinner there on Saturday evening. The restaurant was half full and with good atmosphere. We had no starter, but a large T-bone steak each for mains (£16ish and most expensive on the menu) and ½ bottle wine (£6.5). The meat was very nice and tender and nicely peri-peri spiced, but grilled slightly overdone (if you like it medium - ask for rare - the medium is well done). The fries were excellent - nice, crispy and salty. The green salad for 1 was more then enough for 2. The regulars on the table next to us got a flambéed sausage for starter (seemed to be a hit), and peri-peri chicken & pork ribs for mains. Will try that or the fish as previously suggested next time. The wine list is all-Portuguese. The service was very friendly. Orders were taken by a sweet young girl and wine served by her grandfather - so its typically a family driven place. All in all it was a very pleasant experience, good atmosphere, great food and large portions. You won’t travel the world to go there, but if you live in the neighbourhood it is a great little place for a dinner out. Ps. At present time the restaurant is only open Thursday to Sunday.
The Gallery is most definitely a restaurant, in true Portuguese style. Right down to the unfortunate overuse of tiles. One would never think that behind an unassuming door lay a secret restaurant. It's worth pressing that buzzer! Do have the Bacalhau a Braz - fish, egg and potato, which might not read so pretty but it tastes oh so good.
The beef and chips are a must, but please taste your food before salting it. They like their salt at The Gallery. The same goes for the salad. The Prawn starter was delicious saucy goodness. Drink the wine, eat the bread, and revel in your company!
I would suggest that The Gallery is more of a cafe than a restaurant. The food was disappointing and the place lacking in ambiance. The Gallery had lovely fresh bread but that was unfortunately the only highlight. It would have been nice to have had a non-smoking area.
I am a regular customer of The Gallery but am finding that the owners seem to be fed up with the restaurant trade. The chicken last time I was there was raw and the insides were black and there was no meat on them. Normally the crisps are fresh and crispy but on my last two visits they were old and stale. I hope the Gallery owners see this and they improve on their chickens as if they go this way I hate to say it but I will be going to Nandos.
The Gallery's front takeaway bit doesn't look too hot, but the restaurant out the back is bright and welcoming. The Gallery is Portugese, so that means chicken, fish and plenty of piri piri.
Nice for a change.
