The ViewLondon Review
The George is an unapologetically plain and simple watering hole, although that's no bad thing in Central London.
The Venue
Buried in the back streets behind Oxford Circus, which are so carefully avoided by tourists, The George is an easy pub to spot. The big green giant is supported by faux pillars and a collection of tables sit by the roadside next to it.
The George is a good size and the high ceilings are offset with wooden panelling and intimate enclaves inside. One side of the pub is a free for all with an open plan layout, whilst the other can be commandeered by large groups who want the private sophistication of the study zone. There is no real pizzazz about the decor and old styles have been maintained to appeal to solid drinkers.
The Atmosphere
The solid drinkers are the ones that fill The George during the day. These characters are locals and make up a large contingent of the clientele. The pub is fairly plain and even the tables and chairs outside suffer from the deceptively busy street, meaning that outside is not a place in which you’ll find it easy to relax. Although there aren’t any glaring highlights, this isn’t a bad place for a pint.
The Food
There is a good choice of regular pub food such as a large portioned beef and ale pie. There are also sandwiches and wraps along with plenty of other main courses.
The Drink
If you’re buying two glasses of wine then be sure to remember to claim the rest of the bottle for free. Following the good selection of wine there is an ample choice of lager on tap including Peroni, Stella, Staropramen and Becks Vier. Prices are good for the area with pints averaging the £3-£3.50 mark.
The Last Word
After you’ve marvelled at the glossy varnish on the grand study area’s wooden panels there is little else to remark upon at The George, apart from a good clean pint.
