Don’t overlook this classy Chinese in the heart of Chelsea.

The Venue
Right on the Brompton Road, a busy stretch of Knightsbridge, The Good Earth is a quiet Eastern oasis. Housed on two floors, upstairs is the more sociable area where glossy black lacquer and gold ornaments abound. The room has an elegant chinoiserie feel.

The Atmosphere
It is a civilised grown up venue, never gets rowdy and is much loved by local residents. Comfortable chairs and tables ensure even larger parties are nicely seated -Lazy Susans make for easy party dining. Service is prompt and friendly.

The Food
Although portions are on the small side, the food is beautifully prepared and presented.Flavours are authentic and distinct and you get to specify whether you want MSG in your food or not - an extra nice touch. Order plenty of small dishes and you will be pleasantly full at the end of the meal.

Sweet and sour pork doesn’t appear in a gloopy red sauce, instead the crispy pork is nicely coated in a zingy, fresh lemony wash with lemon zest, red peppers and carrots shredded finely into the sauce. Szechuan beef is very spicy, with the tiny dried chillies visibly garnishing the dish. Peking duck is low on fat and high on taste, with plenty of pancakes and garnish to accompany the dish. Rice is served in pretty wooden bowls with lids. Make sure you have the banana fritters and silky coconut mousse for dessert; both are superb.

The Drink
None of the wines are especially memorable, just some standard reds and whites. Tsingtao beer accompanies the food beautifully as does the jasmine tea.

The Last Word
There are lots of eateries in Knightsbridge, but this veteran will see many of them off with its delicious, tasty Chinese regional cooking.
