Held my son,'s christening here yesterday and was very disappointed and embarrassed. First of all one of the two members of staff behind the bar was very rude and abrupt to my guests. Secondly, we catered for more guests than we had to be on the safe side only to run out of food. The finger food was supposed to be topped up but this was not done straight away as it was still being cooked and when it did come out there was only enough for a handful of people with some of the agreed food missing. When asked to speak to the manager I was informed that he was not in (after him telling me he would be in the previous day). When we asked if he could be reached on the phone he miraculously appeared in the office and finally came down after waiting 30 mins. Granted, he was sympathetic and reduced the final bill. However that does not make up for the fact that we asked for enough food for 65 people and we had 50 guests and there was not enough for everyone. Guests had to order more food of the menu. Thank goodness my guests made it a lovely day because the staff and food was a complete let down.
Will never step foot in this place again.
One star is purely because it's a convenient location.
I have been visiting The Green Dragon for years but the restaurant is clearly going downhill rapidly. Although the restaurant upstairs has been given a makeover I'm afraid the same can't be said for the staff and food. The gentleman who took our order clearly stated that he was only able to take orders for the food by number and not by dish name. When I pay restaurant prices I don't expect takeaway service. He then returned with our wine order, plonked it on the table without a comment or suggestion that we might like to taste it first. The meal continued on a downward spiral when the starters arrived and the sauce for one was placed in a plastic container. The sweetcorn fritters were also inedible and could have been used as a hockey puck. When we complained about the service our waiter sent over the manager. He apologised but even he admitted that he didn't know all the dishes on his menu. The only thing saving the restaurant from a one star review is that the main course was ok and because he reduced our bill to take into account the awful starter. Ps Top Tip. Don't serve the diners who are paying a premium to eat in your restaurant with comedy water glasses because you are using the good ones for a party downstairs.
I attended my friend's 30th Birthday party last night in the restaurant. The food was superb and the staff were friendly and efficient. The only down side was when they ran out of tequila...that could have been because we drank it all though! Would definitely recommend!
I've eaten the Thai food n the bar many times over the last year and visited a few times for a drink. The food is pretty decent for a quick pub lunch but I wouldn't want to make a sit-down meal of it. I use it on occasion because it's very local. I just wish someone would take it by the scruff of the neck and sort out the niggles as it's a great building with huge potential.
The pub's main weakness is the inexperienced staff it seems to employ and the apparent lack of any sort of management. It's rarely busy, but you just get a general sense of incompetence - beer taps displayed but with no beer, running out of coke last week (though they did have plastic bottles bought in from the supermarket!), food orders messed up (happened to me twice in as many months). Just basic stuff that let's the place down entirely.
I was finally prompted to write a review after an event I attended yesterday which was a sort of private party cum event featuring a singer and (just for a few minutes, alas) a live band. The whole thing seemed shambolic, with complaints about the food being served very late and the band cut short after a few numbers, I understand due to complaints about the noise! Such a shame a promising idea at a brilliant location was not managed better. Ah well, we live in hope .....
Took a friend here for lunch a little while ago. I ordered a glass of merlot from the wine list which, when I tasted it, had clearly been open for days - it was like vinegar. Took it back to the bar and politely asked them to change it to be rudely told "I can't change it just because you don't like it" I suggested to the barman that he try it himself but he just said "I'll give you a different one next time"
When the food came it was ok, but no better than average pub thai style food - and was slammed down in front of us without a word.
There are so many pubs and restaurants around Winchmore Hill and Southgate I can't see myself going there again.
Awful Service. Took ages to get anyone to take our order. Drinks order was taken but turned up after 20 mins. The food took ages to come. Tasted overly sweet and lukewarm. My past experience with this place was much better but will never go back and strongly suggest you look elsewhere before entering the Green Dragon. Their menu seems pretty impressive but the food is far from it. With such appalling service and terrible food, its a wonder that their still open. My advice: DON'T GO THERE!
We ate here last night. The service was absolutely atrocious and ruined what would otherwise have been a pleasant meal. The fact that the service was so terrible for everyone didn't do much for the atmosphere in the upstairs restaurant. The three tables near us each seemed to be experiencing some kind of problem with the service (long wait between courses, main course dish arriving (cold) after everyone in the group had finished eating, long wait for the bill).
It took ages for us to order food (although our drinks order was taken promptly), there was an incredibly long wait for starters and main courses (we didn't even bother with the idea of dessert), the prawn crackers we had ordered to nibble while we waited (wisely as it turned out) didn't appear at all until they turned up on the bill, the wrong drinks arrived, the warmed plates were sat in front of us for so long they went cold and had to be replaced, we had to chase to get our main courses at all (I was silently fuming at this point). I nearly left before the main courses turned up, nearly 90 minutes after we had been seated.
When the food did turn up we were so hungry that we didn't really enjoy it (although the food at this pub/restaurant chain is good).
The two main waiting staff were just faffing about - it wasn't even amusing to watch. There didn't seem to be anyone supervising/managing them or directing their efforts, although they were joined by someone who appeared to be from the kitchen. Perhaps he was desperate for some of the food to be served while it was still warm.
In fairness, the bar staff downstairs were horrified when we said the service (or lack of it) had been so terrible.
If you want to try the food from this chain but would like it to be served the same day you get there, try the Cock & Dragon in Cockfosters.
