In the maze of streets behind Goodge Street station is this delightful pub. With ciders aplenty and comfy surroundings it could soon become your new favourite hang-out.

The Venue
Situated on a very quiet street far away from the hustle and bustle of Tottenham Court Road and its environs The Green Man is hard to miss. The huge lime green awning is striking and intriguing. It’s good that it’s a bit of a walk away from all the main busy roads as it attracts a less student and boozy crowd. Upon entering, you realise that it is essentially a modernised old man’s pub and it certainly has a funky feel to it. Although the bar feels small, it is manageable and you can get served without too much of a problem.

The front has more wooden tables and chairs for relaxed drinks whereas, if you make your way to the back and up the stairs, it is as if you have entered a different pub. The upstairs is dramatically smaller but looks like a living room for lads who want to play games and make unsuitable jokes. All the furniture is designed for chilling out and putting your feet up, be it on the chairs or the tables. A massive contrast with the more sensible feel downstairs.

The Atmosphere
During the week, but most notably Thursday and Friday, The Green Man is suffocatingly packed. The city goers know that this pub is quality and want to wash away their work worries here. The music can vary but is mostly 70s rock with DJs in the busier periods. On the weekend, however, it is a whole different kettle of fish.

You wouldn’t think it was the same pub as it is calm and most notably quiet. A great place to have a booze heavy lunch and listen to some classic tracks. People in their twenties and thirties typically spend time here and appreciate its laid-back ambience.

The bar staff are so friendly and lovely that you don’t ever want to leave. Recommending ciders and food with big beaming smiles on their faces which is a wonderful asset to have in a bar.

The Food
Unsurprisingly, the food on offer is mouth-wateringly tasty and typical English comfort food. The portions are huge and well received by all. For starters you can have homemade sausage rolls with ketchup and Dijon mustard (£3.50). They flake off gently in your mouth and the meaty sausage inside is full of flavour.

If you’re not full from your starter, then maybe you should try out the fish pie (£8.50), or the home made West Country beef burger with Maris piper chips (£8.90). Two very filling and tasty choices.

For dessert why not treat yourself to a treacle tart or chocolate pudding smothered in cinnamon custard (£3.50). All good, honest British grub.

The Drink
The main draw of this pub is the fantastic selection of interesting and percentage heavy ciders. There are eight to choose from on their huge blackboard proudly displayed behind the bar. All British and alerting the buyer what percentage their chosen drink has in it.

Their house special cider is called the Green Man special cellar and only comes as a half pint as it is a hefty 7.3 per cent, £1.65. Other draught ciders include: Addlestones cloudy cider (£3.10), Aspalls Suffolk Cyder (£3.15) and Lustons organic draught vintage (£3). You can also have bottled cider which is the usual Magners, Gaymers and Brothers if you don’t feel adventurous enough. The beers are eclectic, much like the pub, with Jupiler Blue (£2.80) and Sierra Nevada (£3.80) with Carling (£2.75) and Red Stripe (£3).

Not much of a beer or cider drinker? Never fear the wine is here! Starting at £11 for a bottle or £2.80 for 175ml glass of Long Shadow Chardonnay for the white and Long Shadow Shiraz for the red, both Australian, This pub caters for all tastes and needs.

The Last Word
The fab surroundings, great attitude and homely food makes The Green Man a winner and you’ll be coming back here again and again.
