16 of us went for my sisters hen do. We had the set menu, which at the last minute they rang to say they couldn't do half the dishes as they hadn't had the correct delivery.

But the subsitutions were very similar and I have to say delicious. I found the staff very helpful, down to earth, if a little inexperienced.

There was a long wait between our mains and desserts but that didn't matter as we were having a lovely time.

The one star comes from the fact that this place had a roof. We went there before a Halloween party and the meal and service were truly fit for the dead. The food was overpriced tosh, no amount of arm-waving was enough to win the attention of the somnambulists waiting on us, and even the picture of the staff member emplazoned on one wall was grumpy. The whole place was grumpy. And, of course, being English we were too polite to scrub out the optional tip. The name of course, is a giveaway, this place is run by amateurs and I've since learned that it offers a homeless and other disadvantaged people a foot in the door of catering. Give money to Shelter, avoid this place.

The Hoxton Apprentice has good food, good value, a nice atmosphere, and a good cause. Try it.

This place is called The Hoxton Apprentice cos it trains disadvantaged kids to chef, a bit like Jamie Oliver's place. The food was good, and it was way cheaper than I expected, so all in all The Hoxton Apprentice was a good night out - and for a good cause too.
