The ViewLondon Review
The younger and slightly bigger sibling to the Portobello Road location serves up deliciously cute American-style cupcakes. The VenueAlthough the iridescent pink tiling and cupcake prints lining the walls of the South Kensington Hummingbird location might be a little too pink for most tastes, it perfectly matches the sinfully sweet cupcakes up for sale. The bakery is just large enough to hold a few velvety chairs and some bar stools which are great if you like to linger over your dessert.
The AtmosphereAlthough many customers pop in and out to pick up cakes they’ve ordered, there are still plenty who lounge around on the chairs or at the bar, reading and savouring their treats. The staff are smiling and friendly, and true to the bakery’s roots wear baseball caps and sports-style t-shirts emblazoned with the shop’s name and logo.
The FoodThe cupcakes are absolutely divine, light and moist and topped with sugary, fluffy American-style frosting instead of usual icing made with just icing sugar and water. They’re also adorably decorated with colourful sprinkles and look so cute you almost can’t bear to eat them. Almost.
Cake flavours include vanilla, chocolate and red velvet (a heavenly mixture of vanilla and chocolate cake that’s been coloured red). If you’re in the mood for something a bit less traditional, there are daily specials available like lavender, mint chocolate, peanut toffee and carrot cake cupcakes. And for those of you who aren’t cupcake fans, there are cakes and pies available as well as cookies, brownies and muffins.
The DrinkThere’s the expected range of sodas, but what you’ll really need after all that frosting is a bottle of water to wash down the sugar.
The Last WordIf you’ve got a sweet tooth, there’s no better place to indulge it than at the Hummingbird Bakery.
