A lovely, gorgeous place to meet and chat to a friend, or simply past the time in your lunch break. Their cupcakes are so pretty you can hardly bear to eat them, and come in a wide range of flavours, from carrot cake to plain old chocolate, with seasonal and daily specials so you can always try something new. You can also get brownies, slices of cake (cheesecake!), and for the super-healthy, muesli bars (can't say I've ever tried one though, I just don't have the willpower).
The décor is attractive, all pastels and comfy seats, and the staff friendly. It's a little pricey, but not out of the normal range for hand-decorated, quality cupcakes.
Personal favourites are the red velvet (a mix of chocolate and vanilla) and carrot cake cupcakes; I highly recommend both, though you could pick almost anything on the menu and be happy (black bottom cupcakes are a bit too rich for me, however).
Slightly dissapointed-whilst the cakes looked delicious, they were slightly dry and did not live up to their descriptions.
The tea came in heavily stained cups (builder style) and whopping big forks with which to eat the cakes (pretty china and cake forks please!).
The decor was very corporate. On the plus side, the cook book is great! Try Bertie and Boo in Balham, blows them out of the water!!
One of faves in the South Kensington is the The Hummingbird Bakery. It was one of those coincidental discoveries that leaves me wondering what life was like before Red Velvet Cake came into my life.
The coffee shop is decked out with red velvet chairs and pearly pink mosaic. It is my great and absolute pleasure to bask in the awesomeness of this colour vision whilst marveling at, and tasting, the wonder of the bakery’s menu.
My only piece of advice: if you feel the need for some sponge therapy on a Sunday, early afternoon is a good idea if you would like to avoid the yummy-mummy traffic.
There are so many delicious cookies, cakes, pies and cupcakes to try that I have developed a technique - I order order a couple…or maybe three or four…or five cupcakes so that I have a taste of all flavours.
Then I go for the full-on cake slice next visit. Your first Hummingbird experience will be trying, as it is quite an ordeal to consume such beautiful cupcake artistry but your taste buds will thank you dearly.
Your outing to Hummingbird may prove pricey (particularly if you have a Red Cupcake addiction) but not ridiculously pricey. It is a lovely treat.
Gorgeous selection of cakes on offer her and a lovely place to spend your lunch hour too.
