The ViewLondon Review

Housed in a former post office, made famous by its appearance on the cover of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album, the flagship branch of the national stable lies in Heddon Street, one of the most newly-burgeoning enclaves of the West End.

The Venue
All glass and dark woods, Living Room has a polished, rustic appeal, with the restaurant area overlooking the pedestrianised street, and the spacious bar situated further within. It’s a more family-friendly feel than the aspiring Smithfields branch and cleaner and smarter than its Essex Road sister.

The Atmosphere
Neither punching above nor below its weight, Living Room attracts a lunchtime clientele who are largely drawn from the corporate sector. Think suits and two pieces. It’s airy, pleasant with working fireplaces, unusual armchairs and a Georgian inspired staircase leading up to the first floor restaurant.

The Food
The menu is much the same as that found at the other outposts: think simple, French and Mediterranean influenced food cooked adequately. Dishes such as sea bass, dauphinoise and beef carpaccios come neatly presented and freshly tasting.

The Drink
Cocktails at Living Room range from classics like martinis, Bloody Marys and Cosmopolitans, to innovative drinks created just for the venue. Try the 8 Year Itch, with eight-year-old Bacardi, brown sugar, Angosturra bitters and orange, or the Red Feather, a fruity mix of cherry Marnier, vodka, green apple puree, strawberries and cranberry juice.

The Last Word
Living Room neither dazzles nor disappoints. It’s the kind of place from which to play it safe, though not one for innovation hunters.
