I usually read reviews of restaurants before going to them, but stupidly felt that I probably did not need to as Luxe was owned by John Torode. I have previously been to Smiths of Smithsfield which was great, so had no reason to worry about booking his other restaurant.
Looking at the reviews on this page, I really wish I had taken the time to do my research!! Four of us went. The starters were lovely, but main meals were luke warm, one was cold and went back to the kitchen, which meant my friend was eating her meal on her own by the time it was returned. Once they knew we were unhappy the change in atmosphere from friendly to rude and abupt was quickly followed by our bill!!
Such a shame that now reading so many reviews, seems a lot of customers have been treated the same.
Food is cold every time, overpriced for the quality, and the staff absolutely unapologetic verging on aggressive. I used to eat here weekly but they have really gone downhill.
The most terrible service I've experienced in a long time - are the staff all mutants and not permitted to speak to you? Waiter didn't know where the fish was sourced, how it was cooked, what the side vegetables were, just shrugged. Really shoddy when you are paying £14 for a main dish. We were given our meals in silence, never checked, cleared without asking, no please, thank you. Food was very unenjoyable as a result. I would have gone to Wong Kei if I wanted that kinda service!
Went to the The Luxe for lunch with a group of 10 friends. Went to the upstairs dining room. Menu choice is very limited (5 starters and around the same for mains. Bar menu downstairs has more choice), with starters mostly consisting of egg dishes.
Most of us had Roast Beef for mains - looked fantastic, especially the Yorkshire pubs. However, looks can be deceiving and the beef was tough and fatty - no wonder they give you a steak knife to eat it with.
All in all, there are better cheaper places to have lunch with friends.
I've had a previously had a couple of bad experiences with with Smiths of Smithfield (resulting in a lifetime boycott from me) but decided to give Luxe Bar, its sister restaurant a go.
I met a friend who had flown over from Spain and Liverpool Street and thought this would be a good place to go to as the food looked promising and it has a bar-style atmosphere which I thought would be fun for a Friday night.
We arrived and waited to ask for a table. The hostess/waitress busied past us a few times without even looking up. Finally we asked if we could get a table and she said she didn't know. Finally she called upstairs to see if there were any tables available but apparently no one was answering. She asked us to wait 5 minutes and she would try again. We waited another 5 minutes. Still nothing so we prompted her to call up again (remember at this stage we didn't even know if there WAS a table, we were just waiting to be told how long we might have to wait if there was one). She called upstairs again (with an air of being put out that we were asking). Again, no answer. She asked us to wait another 5 minutes and she would try again. We walked out.
Don't even get me started on Smith's of Smithfield. Seems the staff in both Luxe and SOS are recruited on their ability to make customers feel like they are a nuisance. Style over substance I'd say!
Living around the corner from Luxe I was looking forward to it opening and hoping it would be significantly better than Spitz which previously occupied this prime location in Spitalfields market. Both the service and food in Spitz was poor and unfortunately it hasn't improved under John Torode's ownership.
I've now been there four times in the past month (both to the bar and restaurant), each time praying it's improved as I genuinely wanted it to succeed and hoping that the management's excuses on previous visits had been resolved. They haven't and I won't be going back. The latest visit was on a not-particularly busy Saturday afternoon. After twenty minutes of being ignored we asked if we could order drinks. Thirty minutes later (having asked where they were four times) the drinks finally arrived. We had to remind them to bring our bread, our cutlery, our water. When the food it arrived it was, at best, average. My steak was overcooked and fatty, the full English disguised it's meager portion with a huge chunk of toast and the fish was lukewarm at best. The highlight was the crisp chips.
John Torode was rushing around whilst we were there which makes it all the more surprising the whole thing was such a shambles. Not once did anyone ask if everything was okay. Perhaps they knew what our answer would be. There are many fine places to eat around the locality so do yourself a favour and pick one of those. Behind the funky facade there isn't really much substance to Luxe.
I was excited about going to luxe - not because of John Torode but because I ate at Smiths last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. The restaurant had a very nice buzz to it, the service was impeccable. The food was great and Mr. Torode himself was waiting on tables which says a lot about the man. If you are in the east end and near Spitafileds market its definitely worth a go. Other TV chefs who are struggling with their empires should take note.
Fantastic place - great atmosphere, superb food and brilliant choice of booze.
Definitely a destination venue and I will be back many many times!
I am a long-term regular of the Ten Bells accross the road however, it's now been 02 weeks that I am drinking the best Cuba-Libre's ever in this new & amazing bar.
I simply love the fact that everything you ask to the bartenders for, they do it for you without a wonder.
Isn't a fantastic/extraordinary thing to get these days?.I wish them success. They just opened.
I heard it is Masterchef's second baby flashing in the London scene when everything else is disappearing...
Walked past this bar the other night and just had to go in for a drink!
The chef was testing out the new menu so even got to try some of the food for free!
Very relaxed atmosphere, ideal for socializing whether in a big group or just a few of you! With the added bonus of a restaurant on the upper floors!
If only they had some burlesque dancers for the cages outside....
