Thanks to its refurbishment, Epsom’s Marquis of Granby is enjoying its transformation into a hip, heaving and contemporary nightspot.

The Venue
The recently renovated Marquis of Granby combines the heart of an authentic English pub with theatrical design, novelty talking pieces (the wax candle adorned oak piano is a favourite) and junkshop chic. As one of Epsom’s oldest pubs The Marquis was becoming rapidly outdated in recent years but has now been given a new lease of life. The alternative, stylish and artistic interior now encompasses eccentric lamps, eclectic tables and chairs and a bizarre and wonderful collection of unusual oddities behind the bar.

The combination of innovative interior and traditional pub exterior are delightfully unusual and set it apart from other Epsom pubs. The garden and patio areas at both the front and rear are particularly popular whilst inside it's equally as rammed at weekends and queues for the bar can be deep.

The Atmosphere
The pub’s previously surly bar staff have now been replaced with fresh faced art school students and gap-year travellers who give the bar a much younger feel, encouraging the town’s art school students to flock to this watering hole almost every night. Although predominantly young, everyone in Epsom seems to visit the bar at one time or another and no-one appears out of place whatever their age or inclination. Intergenerational drinking at its best.

The Food
In keeping with the new interior is the new contemporary cuisine. Traditional pub grub favourites have all been given a modern once over. Steak and Chips, Pie and Peas and Bangers and Mash are now thoroughly edible, stylishly cooked, moreish masterpieces. A special mention must go to the 19 day aged steak burger with stilton and honey glazed bacon, served with thick but crispy real potato wedges, that is well priced and totally delicious.

The Drink
After your meal, you're likely to stay all night. With its new late licence the bar stays open past 1am and with the wide range of ales, traditional lagers and newly imported European bar staff chances are you'll find yourself looking for excuses to stay as late as you can. The soundtrack to the drinking isn't bad either - indie, cool electronica and much loved retro and rock classics feature heavily.

The Last Word
If you’re a fan of fine attention to detail, contemporary art school cool and a wide selection of beverages, The Marquis of Granby will serve you well. An excellent pub and an excellent night out.
