The Pelican may look like your typical traditional pub but it has a musical heart and acts like The Clash have been known to rock out on stage here.

The Venue
The Pelican looks like any other typical traditional Victorian pub. The ground floor is where the main area can be found, split into an L-shape thanks to the large bar. The colourscheme is dark – dark wood panelling, maroon leather sofas, dark floors, dark ceilings – you get it, it’s dark. However, it’s all given a lift thanks to the large front windows that flood the space with light. In the winter, the open fireplaces keep things cosy, instead. The wooden tables and chairs have been sourced from Camden Market and have a worn, comfortable appeal.

Otherwise, artwork depicting rock and roll legends ensures the music edge that sets this place apart isn’t forgotten. Walking up a staircase, you’ll find the place where all the action happens with a capacity for around 100 people. However, it’s still decked out with the same opulent sense of luxury as downstairs and certainly can’t be described as a shabby live music venue. Up here a DJ booth also resides for when live acts aren’t on. And if there is no entertainment when you visit? Make use of their impressive jukebox. Job done.

The Atmosphere
The Pelican has that kind of laid back appeal that makes it ideal for hosting music events. While much of Notting Hill has a certain smug superiority about it, this place is actually very inviting and the staff almost seem happy to see you. Almost. They are too cool to be that keen. And they’ve certainly put a great deal of effort into providing punters with entertainment. Quiz nights, live music and regular Friday night DJs playing a mix of house, disco and funk - it certainly goes that extra mile.

The Food
There’s a simple, small food menu on offer at The Pelican, with a focus on pies, traditional dishes like fish and chips or sausage and mash, and, of course, burgers. All priced at well under a tenner, it’s certainly great value for the area. However, if you just want to pick at something then try a ‘pint of chips’ for £3.15. Cute.

The Drink
Although they clearly love their music at The Pelican, there is a focus on beer here, too, which is good to see. On draught, lagers like Amstel, Sagres, Heineken and Kronenbourg are joined by Guinness and two real ales - Sharps Doom Bar and Deuchars IPA. This is bolstered by a nice bottle selection. If you prefer the grape then the selection is limited with just a handful of reds and as many whites, but the choice is cheap with bottles starting at just £12.50 and staying under the £30 mark.

The Last Word
If you’re used to grotty live music venues then The Pelican makes a nice change as it has style and substance. A strong musical history makes it more than just a wannabe.
