The ViewLondon Review
Hush is the perfectly titled host for this tucked away restaurant that brings you fine, sophisticated dining with a delicious air of exclusivity.
The Venue
Finding The Silver Room takes you through an enchanting courtyard in Mayfair with low-lit bars and restaurants and a pretty, winding alleyway. There's an attractive outdoor area for pre-dinner drinks, as well as a suave cocktail lounge that bubbles nicely with businessmen and soon-to-be fine diners. Upstairs you’ll find The Silver Room, slightly set apart from the noise of the bar, in an intimate space with well-presented tables, crisp white linen and a striking motif of a tree adorning one wall.
The Atmosphere
You’ll be made to feel special by the high level of service at The Silver Room, right through from the taking of your coats on entrance and the folding of the napkin on your lap, to the expert recommendations from the modern European menu. Fellow diners are a mix of well-heeled locals enjoying the excellent fare, and those staying in the equally impressive hotels nearby.
The Food
The selection of mouthwatering starters will get your meal started with a bang. Carpaccio of beef ‘Harry’s Bar’ style will impress, as wafer thin slices are spread out across a large plate, complemented by zig zags of horseradish sauce. This beef is so tender and full of flavour that it simply melts in the mouth. Or perhaps you’d like to taste the sublime Forman’s smoked salmon with a drizzle of buttery sauce, crispy toasted poliane and a lemon wrapped in muslin to save you from those pesky pips. Other options include spiced parsnip soup with a cinnamon muffin and dressed Dorset crab with avocado - all are priced about £6.50 - £18.50.
Mains are every bit as impressive. Lobster arrives attractively displayed, grilled whole with a herby, garlic sauce and a side of traditional pomme frites with skins left on. The garlic gives this firm meaty fish a distinctive French flavour. Also on the menu is pot roast pheasant with chestnut stuffing on a bed of cabbage. The pheasant is disappointingly a little dry following the standard of the starters and the crunchy chestnut stuffing unfortunately does nothing to make up for it. Sides are recommended with this dish as the small cabbage bed seems to be more for effect than anything else. Alternative mains include Scottish rib eye steak, scallop masala or slow roast pork belly. All are priced about £12.50 - £29.50.
And on to the desserts, if you still have room. Go traditional with a proper sticky toffee pudding in a hot, honey sweet sauce and a side of soured creme fraiche. The Mars Bar cheesecake - a favourite on the menu for ten years - is very thick and rich, with an inner weaving of caramel saving it from being too stodgy. The best part of this dish, however, is the side of praline ice cream which should be a dish on its own - it has an amazing nutty, chocolate flavour that’s also surprisingly light. You can also enjoy a selection of cheeses with fig chutney, or an excellent baked rice pudding with rhubarb. All are priced about £5.50 - £7.50.
The Drink
You can choose how far to push the boat out with what's an extensive range of wine list options. From vintage Champagnes (£85-£225) to red and white wines that include Italian pinot grigios, French meursaults, Chilean merlots and Spanish riojas (£18.95 - £79), there's plenty of scope to go from the affordable to the extravagant on a wine list that's clearly been well thought out. If you choose the cheese to finish, you might like to try one of their many dessert wines or a glass of vintage port. And there’s also a cocktail list if you want to start or end your meal in real style - what more could you want?
The Last Word
With excellent food, most notably the starters and desserts, and equally impressive service, this intimate and appealing restaurant is definitely worth a visit.
