This lunchtime the Stonhouse refused to serve the guy who is painting my front room. He is middle-aged, Irish, hardworking, funny and nice. He was dressed in working clothes. Apparently someone who's spent his life painting other people's property isn't good enough to buy a drink at the Stonhouse.
A very friendly place, nice patio and good service. The food used to be fantastic, but since opening has gone down hill, I hope they can improve it back to the first class nosh it used to be.
My family and I went to The Stonehouse on Saturday for lunch. I had been in the evening before and had a nice meal. So as I had guests thought it was a good place to go.
Firstly, even with a child in tow we had to ask for a children's menu as the waitress didn't seem to notice. Then once we had ordered we then waited approx 45mins. After this time one of the group went to ask where or how long the food would be. It wasn't very busy there. The reply we got was "we had to go and catch the fish" by the barman. No apology. Returning to the table we decided to leave when out of no where all the food suddenly appeared as if by magic. Seeing we were leaving the same man who was at the bar who now had the food said to us it was only a 20 minute wait. We just left as we found this was really rude and at no point was an apology offered or common curtiousy shown. Oh and it had been 45 minutes and a man who looked like the manger (not sure if he was) was present the entire time but didn't seem to be aware of people waiting for food.
I would not recommend that you go there, unless they get some new staff.
Having heard good things about The Stonhouse, I had been meaning to go for a while - and it didn't disappoint! Went last Thursday and it was pretty busy and had a good vibe. It's smarter than your average pub, but the staff were very friendly and looked after us well.
I had a delicious manuka salmon pate to start, and cornish crab cakes, which were very fresh and surprisingly light. I had a fantastic steak (perfectly cooked and tender) and my girlfriend had the mussels, which she seemed very happy about! There's a good wine list - I recognised a couple of wines from another gastropub I go to a fair bit, and the prices here were cheaper. All in all, an excellent evening - will be back at The Stonhouse soon.
The Stonhouse is quite a posh affair and although it did feel a bit up itself, the food was really good as was the service. Prices not too bad I suppose, though there's some pricey wines that I think should be avoided. All in all though, The Stonhouse was a nice experience and probably one I'd like to have again.
