The ViewLondon Review
Just metres away from fashionable Carnaby Street, The Sun and 13 Cantons is a popular choice for both the effortlessly cool and the after work set.The VenueGorgeously subtle decor with low lighting and creaking floorboards make The Sun and 13 Cantons the ultimate pub to retreat to in the colder months. With not a poker machine nor a pool table in sight, this Soho watering hole oozes style and sophistication without overdoing it. Mirrors adorn the walls in the back room, giving drinkers the dubious pleasure of witnessing their increasing inebriation.
The AtmosphereDowning some decent ales and gossiping is the name of the game here and by 7pm, The Sun is packed with a gaggle of Londoners, shouting over each other to be heard. Relaxed isn’t the word that comes to mind. It’s a much more frenetic vibe, with drinkers huddled in groups and in corners whilst getting down to the serious business of drinking.
The FoodFor those Londoners who have long lamented a lack of decent and affordable Thai food in Central London, The Sun and 13 Cantons is a godsend. The attached Thai Lemon Restaurant supplies drinkers with everything from spicy soups to hold onto your seat jungle curries. The fish cakes are rich and sumptuous, the pad thai is hearty in size with beautifully balanced flavours and the green curry packs a punch. At around £5 a main meal, it’s reasonable too.
The DrinkThe reasonable wine list from a cross section of regions and a good selection of beers on tap, will keep most drinkers happy at The Sun. Whilst it’s in no way a wine connoisseur’s spiritual home, it has enough stock to satisfy the majority of Londoners and at reasonable, albeit Soho, prices.
The Last WordAn elegant English pub in a great location, The Sun and 13 Cantons is perfect for a tipple or two and an inexpensive meal.
