The ViewLondon Review
Tucked away in a basement in Bayswater, the Tiroler Hut is a small restaurant with a big personality. The VenueThe interior of the Tiroler Hut appears to have been modelled on the sort of bar that you might find yourself gargling gluwein in at three in the morning on a ski resort. It's located in a basement, but you won’t notice the lack of windows because frankly, there wouldn’t have been room for them anyway - what with all the antlers, ski-suits, cuckoo clocks and tinsel fighting for space on the walls.
The AtmosphereThe atmosphere in the Tiroler Hut is unrivalled by anywhere else in London. Entertainment is provided by the multi-talented owner, who, aided and abetted by his friends, leads the punters in rousing sing a long renditions of German drinking songs, classics from The Sound of Music and plenty of yodelling. The climax of the show comes in the form of his The Cowbell Cabaret, which has been featured on the Paul O’Grady show and Opportunity Knocks.
The FoodThe menu, more or less unchanged since the sixties, features meat, cheese and cream in quantities that would have the British Heart Association up in arms. Classic dishes from Germany, Austria and Hungary are tasty if a little unrefined and the threat of obesity hangs heavy in the air.
The DrinkSturdy waiting staff dressed in traditional Tyrolean costumes heave enormous tankards of beer onto the tables and shots of fiery homemade schnapps are administered to diners in reckless quantities. You will be up against heavyweight drinkers such as Kate Moss, who has been known to stop by, and there is a strong risk that you will wake up the next day blind and in a gutter.
The Last WordBoisterous, kitsch and completely bonkers, a visit to the Tiroler Hut is an unmissable experience. Book well in advance if you want to visit on a weekend, or at any time during the Christmas period. Recommended.
