The ViewLondon Review
A boisterously friendly neighbourhood restaurant in the culinary graveyard that is SE16, The Yellow House is a real find. The VenueWell, they certainly weren't lying about it being yellow, which makes the restaurant easy to find on this quiet residential street in Surrey Quays. The tiny rectangular dining room has deep red walls and an abundance of dark wood, with a slightly needless bar halfway down. Some seats look directly into the clay pizza oven and kitchen, which is always a bonus for the nosy or those struggling to make conversation on a first date.
The AtmosphereThe crowd here are mostly locals and, judging by the familiar welcome they receive, many of them are regulars. The service is exceptionally pleasant – soliticious without being intrusive – and the chef frequently pops out of the kitchen to ask diners about their meal or encourage them to try his homemade desserts. The Yellow House restaurant is only open from Wednesday to Sunday and its popularity means booking is a must.
The FoodThe menu has two sections – one is devoted entirely to pizza and the other to the regularly-changing European classics. The small kitchen emphasises seasonality and freshness with a few dishes done superbly.
The DrinkThe wine list is brief, but scrupulously chosen to match the food. You may find yourself so overwhelmed by the value for money offered by the food that you decide to splash out on the list's more expensive wines.
The Last WordThe phrase that sums up The Yellow House is a labour of love, but it’s worth every bit of care that they take. Highly recommended.
