The ViewLondon Review
Healthy eating is made fun at Tossed.
The Venue
Tossed jostles with several other eateries on the Balcony in the upper level of the new Westfield Shopping Centre. Most of the restaurants here are self service, and tables are shared between restaurants, which is great as it means not having to eat from exactly the same place as your companions. The dining area is white and clean with a choice of whether to sit in a more restaurant style area, set away from the concourse, or on the outer side from which you can watch the shops and shoppers from your table.
The Atmosphere
You might expect a self service restaurant to have an unpleasant, plastic-y shopping centre atmosphere, but Westfield has done away with this. Instead, on arrival there’s a happy hum as diners tuck into a wide range of dishes on offer from the restaurants in the area. The majority of the clientele and diners lack shopping bags, implying they are here to enjoy an nice meal out rather than actually shopping!
The place feels quite busy, but it is well worth the wait – you may have to queue to order, and will then need to find your own seat. Restaurant staff are helpful and friendly despite the busy activity, and one of the best things is that you can watch the chefs at work as they prepare your dishes, most of which require preparation on the spot.
The Food
If you think healthy eating means dull, tasteless dishes, you will be pleasantly surprised. There is a good range of small light bites and larger dishes on offer; although not an enormous variety, the range of customisable toppings means there is something for everyone, even (just about) those who dislike leaf salads.
Prices start at about £4 for a wrap, or £4.25 - £4.95 for a soup. Main dishes are priced from about £7 to £9. For excellent value the £9.95 salmon salad is delicious; the salmon is delicately cooked, set on a bed of green beans, tomato, and salad which is very fresh. Garnished with capers, and with a light tangy lemony dressing, it goes down a treat. The Chicken Caesar Deluxe (£8.95) is as it should be, with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and a creamy source, although compared to the salmon it could seem a little bland. The people at Tossed also manage to provide a healthy dessert: fat free frozen yoghurt (£2.95) provides a creamy, slightly sweet base, though it is reliant on a choice of toppings to give added flavour.
The ingredients used are all fresh (they are sourced from as locally as possible, and the meats are also farm assured) and good quality, meaning extra flavouring isn’t necessary and it all provides a filling meal. For anyone on a diet there is also a calorie counter and Weight Watcher points available online on the Tossed site (a bit complicated but useful), and dietary information available at the counter.
The Drink
Again, if you are watching your figure as well as trying to eat healthily, calories and points are listed for all drinks on offer here online or at the counter. A simple range of drinks from juices to beers and wines are on offer. The specialty here is the non-alcoholic smoothies and juices. A delicious beetroot, carrot and ginger juice (£2.85) is an amazing colour and presented in an elegant tumbler; it tastes deliciously sweet from the beetroot with a tangy ginger taste, all smoothly blended together. The range of smoothies are similar to other smoothie shops and again are all made with healthy natural ingredients such as fat free frozen yoghurt, soya milk and dairy free options. A limited range of wine and beer is on offer, but at quite reasonable prices, with the option of buying by the glass at about £4, or from £14.95 per bottle (a good Prosecco comes in at £18.95 per bottle).
The Last Word
Tossed at Westfield offers quality, healthy eating at reasonable prices. Along with the calorie counter, there’s also the bonus of the deliciously satisfying, tasty food.
