Consistently awful and god knows I've tried to like this place as I live about a block away. It is unbelievably expensive - £6.90 for a pint of lager and a handful of nuts. Cavernous and echoing with the sound of crying children all evening as well as daytime. . Staff are dismissive and don't know anything about the drinks they are selling. The menus look the business but the execution is terrible and has been every single time I've been (6+ times). I had really hoped this place would be good but it isn't...I'm giving up. Try St John, Lord Palmerston, Pineapple or Junction. Anywhere but here.
We went for dinner to this pub several times as we live on the same street. The interior is quite nice and fairly new, with a large outside area. The staff is very friendly and efficient, they seem to know what they're doing. They have a nice selection of wines and beers but every time we order food, we are very disappointed.
Last time there I ordered the supposed "Lamb Burger" (which really was a raw lamb patty on a bed of over-salted lentils). The taste was not horrible but there were WAY too many lentils, the lamb was undercooked, and it most definitely didn't resemble a burger of any sort.
I am quite disappointed, and am not basing this opinion one on or even two visits, keeping in mind the prices in this establishment are on the higher end. Again, this place is very well refurbished and it has the potential to be a great place for anyone in the area to have dinner but I believe they need to make some changes in the menu
I agree with the review just posted. We have tried to like this place. Unfortunately, the drinks are really pricey and overpriced, the pizza was tiny and so ungenerous in toppings (and very expensive for what you get), the staff weren't keen to have kids in despite the fact that most of the clientele there had prams. We've tried it 4 times and it's only because of it's location that we go back. The cakes in the cafe were dry and inedible. It's such a pity. If they could just get more realistic with the prices, be a little friendlier, and make sure the food is fresh it would be so popular and we'd been in there very often as there's such a need for a good gastropub in the area.
Yes the place has been nicely revamped, especially the breakfast room. It is still a bit soulless to my taste and they could have done something much nicer out of the outside space at the back. But the high prices are totally unjustified considering the very poor quality of the food, the ridiculously small portions you get and the fact you are in Tufnell Park and not Hampstead (actually you eat better and cheaper in Hampstead). Not only food is expensive, but also drinks, £4 for a pint fo Shandy (with the cheapest beer available). It is the first time I pay that much in London. BTW I asked the barmaid how much was a pint of beer, and yes Tufnell Park Tavern is one of those places where they have no shame to charge lemonade the same price as beer when in a shandy! I complained about it, but "the computer said no!", the barmaid stood behind the management's decisions. The great achievement of the place is to manage to sell you a pizza bread with a layer of tomato sauce that is thinner than cigarette rolling paper with two basil leaves for more than £10. You will easily spend £8 for pasta with some cheap condiments that will make you sick once at home. I complained about the small size of portions and the high prices to the manager, I was not offered anything not even a sorry, and of course when I returned nothing had changed...
So if you eat badly there, this is not bad luck, this is by design, the menu and prices seemed to have been created by a computer software that only knows who to maximise profits.
Finally the place is not even child friendly, which is an aberration in Tufnell Park.
So what most locals say about the place is that it lacks a competitor, everybody I spoke too in the area is aware they are taking advantage of the quasi monopoly position they hold locally.
If you are thinking about opening a bar restaurant in London, please come to Tufnell Park, if you do a better job than Tufnell Park Tavern, which should be very easy, people will love y
I had high hopes - great space, great food menu, great decking outside. As a local i was delighted when i realised after the refurb it was wheelchair friendly, accessible, ramp outside, internally all one floor and access to the outside decking. But on my first visit i was very disappointed to discover that the great sized fresh clean disabled toilet did not follow the industry spec and therefore cannot be used by a wheelchair user. I did email them last year but never had a response, which i assume means it was not a priority. A shame as my friends and i go out as a group regularly in north london for drinks and meals and it would have been a perfect addition. If it had a usable toilet i would have awarded it 4 or 5 stars.
I do not mind going for a quiet drink here, but I would recommend caution if eating. I had the fish pie and my friend had the gnocchi. Both were very small portions. One expects a simple dish like fish pie, at £13.50, to at least fill you up! The pizza's looked quite good, maybe get those if you want better value!
I visited on a Sunday evening having read rave reviews in the local press. Can only think the journalist was expected and special attention laid on for him because it was dire. Service was appalling, miserable and basically not service at all. The food was far too expensive for what it was - roast beef - erm no roast fat. No one asked how we wanted it cooked and it was served practically raw. It cost £16 60 per head and was not at all worth it. No taste, bland, poor presentation. Never have a cheese platter because for £7.50 you get 8 small Carr's table water cheese biscuits, and cocktail stick size cheest - the size they give you in a supermarket for tasting - brie, danish blue and can't even guess what the other cheese was and a teaspoon size of chutney - and that was it - rip off. Children running around after 7.30 p.m. Waitresses never around you had to go searching for them to get anything. Wouldn't recommend this at all and it won't see me again. I spent £82 and personnaly feel ripped off.
I've been here several times now, and always found the food excellent and the service friendly and, with one exception, pretty efficient. All in all, a great addition to the area.
Been nere twice now and on both times the service has been nothing short of diabolical. Have liven in Tufnell Park for about 10 years and during that time have seen the area get some great pubs. The Junction Tavern is without doubt the best of the bunch but the Lord Palmerston and St Johns are both worth a visit. This place is not. While they've done a good job creating a styling decor and outside area they have not cracked the basics of running a pub - great service. The place is split into two - a bar area where you have to go to the bar to place all orders and a restaurant area where it is table service. On Saturday the restaurant was literally empty while the outside and bar areas were busy. Queues to get drinks and food, smug waitresses in the restaurant area with nothing to do just standing there and looking at the queues. Food was not bad but again, not a patch on the Junction Tavern where the food and service are both second to none.
The Tufnell Park Tavern is a great Pub/Coffee Shop with a warm, friendly atmosphere and delicious food and coffee. We have gone several times in the evening for drinks and either their hummus plate or one of their crispy thin pizzas. Also we have visited several times in the morning for breakfast and coffee. It is unique and wonderful how this pub creates a comfortable homey atmosphere in the morning for breakfast, then right next door has a lovely pub atmosphere with great drinks and pizza. The staff in friendly and helpful. We love stopping by any time of the day and will be going back very often!
I'm actually sitting in this pub at the moment using the wireless as it's not working in my house a few doors down.
I love this place. Just had a delicious 'Turkish' pizza. Very friendly staff, warm decor and the food is great. Also doubles as a coffee shop in the morning for passers by who want coffees and croissants and the like
Brilliant pub that the area has needed for some time
This pub has only been open a couple of weeks, but my friends and I have been five times already as we really like it! There's a good range of beers and wines, the staff are all warm and friendly and the pizzas are thin and crispy, Roman style, and really tasty (try the potato and Gorgonzola!)
There are a few kinks to be ironed out - some of the staff need a bit more training, and the smoke alarms seem to go off every couple of hours! - but there's a fun, laid-back atmosphere that means you'll enjoy yourself anyway.
All in all a great local gastropub.
