I had stumbled upon Ubon while walking around Canary Wharf several months ago and had been eager to try it. Having dined at some of the best sushi restaurants in LA and SF, I was curious to see how a "high-end" sushi restaurant held up in London. I had a lobster salad that was out of this world, and the sushi was indeed excellent overall, despite how expensive it is. Our service wasn't the best but considering it was a Friday night I suppose it's to be expected. I would definitely go back but would love to sit at the sushi bar rather than at a table, and have the chef select the dishes for me. I will say that many of my favourite selections in the States (barracuda, butterfish, swordfish, pencilfish, flying fish, and kobe beef sushi) were not available.

Ubon does super food, it's not cheap but it is good value. The service at Ubon is adequate however, the sting in the tail came when we were entertaining clients and asked for another drink only to be told that the bar was now closed and the General Manager doesn't allow drinks in the afternoon. It was about 5.30pm and the restaurant re-opened for dinner at 6pm.

We were originally told that we could not have drinks due to licensing laws and asked to vacate the restaurant. We were well mannered and having spent over £800 including £105 for service we felt short changed.

Our colleages were drinking till around 6pm the previous evening with the same clients. It will take a persuasive client to get me back to Ubon in a hurry!

The sushi at Ubon was delicious, the teriyaki salmon and Beef "Toban" Yaki very good. The menu is not straightforward to navigate with lots of sections such as "appetisers", "salads", "special dishes", "mains" that are not in an order you might expect, and to be honest I didn't think the waiter was particularly gracious in talking us through it.

The view is lovely, though your fellow diners on a week night are most likely to be groups taking their business meetings out of the office.

Biggest gripe - an automatic 15% service charge is added to your bill, and then they leave the credit card slip open. Bill for two with a bottle of champagne was £150.
