Our first visit here (14/4/10) and we were seriously impressed. Right from the time we arrived, even though it was packed, we were greeted warmly, sorted with drinks in double-quick time, and the staff were attentive all evening.
The food was superb, hot, served on hot plates!, and great value for money. We loved the wine list and enjoyed a great Bourgogne at a great price.
We will definitely be back - thank you.

A dozen of us ate in the Union Cafe last night. Most of us had gone there before (we first discovered it, as fans of the late lamented Oratory, after the South Ken restaurant closed). The food was absolutely fine as was the service. My complaint is the price--a whopping £55 per person for three courses. We didn't have pre-dinner drinks, or coffees, or fancy main courses (the most popular main course at our table was burger and chips). Most of us had three courses from the (compulsory) groups menu, some just had two. We had jugs of tap water and (lots of) bottles of Pinot Grigio and a standard red wine. The groups menu is £33+12.5% service charge for three courses. We did have a fair amount of wine: we got through one bottle of wine per person, but £55 for a burger, two other courses and a bottle of pinot grigio is still an awful lot of money. Isn't it?
Extremely good food.
The risotto starter and lamb main course were especially good.
Service was good but not excellent, I expect they are still finding their feet a bit...
Hence 4 stars out of 5
I am in agreement with the latest reviews - went there this week and had a lovely meal served by attentive staff who were amusing and friendly. Had such a good time that I plan to take Canadian cousins next week as such good value. Althouth not a regular, this has been consistent with all the times I have been there.
Three of us had a wonderful dinner experience at Union Cafe last week. The food was very attractively presented, reasonably priced, and tasted great as well as looking good, and the servers were lovely and helpful the entire evening. We stayed for three hours, and never felt anything but welcome. Don't believe earlier reviews about bad service; if that was ever the case, it's not true now. I'd recommend the place to anyone. I can see why it seems to be so crowded most of the time. Thanks Stella, and the other wait staff as well whose names I didn't catch. Excellent work...
I was taken here by two good friends of mine Bob & Mark 1st March 08
Good menu, excelent presentation, very friendly staff, nice layed out Resturant what else can I say but thanks for a lovelly evening.
I can only agree with the other negative reviews here - the owners of Union Cafe should be very worried as their Manager there has no respect for customers and their waitresses were either very unhappy or feeling ill, which spoilt the evening. We ate and drank average food, not good value. They are fortunate to be in such a good location, but I would strongly recommend that readers find somewhere else in Marylebone.
After I read the past reviews I was a bit sceptical about the Union Cafe, but my friends strongly recommended it, so we went. The food was excellant and surprisingly fresh. The wine though not to my taste, my friends they thought was good.
The food was great value for money and the service was as good as any professional restaurant. We had waiting staff with a good sense of humour. Thank you again for the experience and thank you to the Union Cafe manager.
Service and food at Union Cafe both good, pleasant atmosphere, wine and food at Union Cafe was good value.
Food was excellent at the Union Cafe as was the wine and sensibly priced. It's a pity the Union Cafe staff showed litle enthusiasm for serving the customers.
After reading reviews about Union Cafe I was slightly dreading the rude service but I could not find fault. It was a fantastic evening with fabulous food, great company, wonderful ambience and the service was extremely efficient particularly from our waiter, Ben. It could teach other better known restaurants a lesson or two.
Union Cafe was a truly wonderful dining experience and a great venue for catching up with friends.
Union Cafe has excellent food but shockingly rude service.
I spent a pleasant early evening meal there with friends on a Wednesday night. The food was excellent - I had roast duck for starter and rare seared tuna for main, both of which were tasty and well executed.
However, throughout my evening at Union Cafe I was forced to battle with incompetent and rude waiting staff. This culminated in being asked to leave very soon after paying the bill because the restaurant had foolishly already booked the table for another party.
I understand the pressure for tables in London but having spent less than two hours in Union Cafe where we all spent around £45.00 per head I felt insulted. I can no longer recommend this restaurant.
