Food poisoning
I must say that I am so very disappointed.
An organic ready meal gave my girlfriend a bout of e-coli poisoning.
I loved this place but am left disgusted both by the illness it created and the follow up given after the complaint was made.
On my initial conversation with the director of the company I was assured a thorough investigation and offered a fruit basket to be sent directly to a very sick person at home.
The investigation did not happen, nor did the fruit basket and subsequent attempts to contact the director have been blocked and ignored.
Two weeks later I contacted the head of the department that the problem meal had come from. To my disgust he had not even been made aware of the situation.
The e-coli ridden food could have been anything from poor temperature management to more serious problems at the source.
It's an extremely dangerous bacteria and it is utterly unbelievable the follow up that this situation has been given.
The grocery manager, the second contact, shared my disgust and promised a follow up within 24 hours.
This is a week ago.
Certainly does not appear to me like a well run company. From my experience here I can understand why my girlfriend got food poisoning that left her ill for more that a week
I had lunch here today, and the service and food was first class. Being a foody I have been really interested in seeing how this place would progress. when it first opened it was a little confused. I hear that there is a new team in here and an exception new head chef, well I can say it really shows. On my way out, I thought that I would buy some meat from the butchers, who were friendly, and sold me a fantastic steak and a very reasonable price! I will be back. Who needs to escape to the country when you can slip into Union.
I couldn't believe the service I got today. It was absolutely appalling. At the cashier I guess he didn't see me carrying groceries, he looked at me like what are you doing in the queue with no groceries. With displeasure clearly showing & no words, he put the groceries in a bag then abruptly dropped the receipt & the bag on the counter in front of me.
I don't know what his problem was. This is London, I don't expect much service wise but it was something else. He was clearly upset about something & wanted it shown, mind you I said nothing, did nothing & didn't even open my mouth.
I've been going there partly to support them because I know since the grand opening, they are getting quieter & quieter & I wanted them to stay open. But not after today. I don't choose to spend money & get that kind of service.
The reply by UM to the person that commented about organic meats and a lack of variety pretty much sums up the place. I am not writing this to be nonconstructive, i am writing it because Union market has the potential to be really great.
The person had some valid points and rather than take them on board, union market chooses to argue. You don't sell organic meats, well to be honest maybe you should.
As for the comment about finding most items in your supermarket - I actually agree that in Union market there is not enough alternative products and feel very limited compared to a major supermarket which would not be a problem if they had something special to offer. Rather than argue, why not ask what products they might like to find in there that they cant. I for one have loads of ideas, but i guess Union Market will just tell me to come and look again rather than ask me.
I myself was refreshed to see there may be a good butchers in Fulham Broadway, but was very let down when I asked the gentleman behind the counter (not a butcher) to cut a rib of beef down a little to be told meats are sold as seen and they do not cut to size. I asked myself what the point of the counter was? - I went to waitrose where they were more than happy to cut to the size i wanted.
It seems UM market do not put the customer first and if they do not change their attitudes will be finding themselves closing down.
As mentioned earlier, listen to your customers, don't fight them, and you have a successful business with lots of potential.
After my experience, I do not think i will returning until some changes are made.
Terrible food, i got the lunch there, regret that
the grocery has a nice selection
extremely quiet in there even at peak time
awful atmosphere
Saw the review below and I have to disagree. My housemates and I wandered down to the Union last weekend to check it out and ended up buying all the food and drink we needed for a party we were having that evening. I love the fact it stocks English wines, all the staff were really friendly and kept trying to feed us tasty treats and I think the range of produce available is fantastic. So glad this store is here!
This place is probably fine if you want to buy some organic meat, however the grocery section of this large store is pretty small and uninspiring (mainly items which you can find in Sainsburys or Waitrose) and is certainly no contest whatsoever to Wholefoods or Planet Organic in terms of selection. I think we got the measure of Union Market's way of doing things when we found the store to be closed early yesterday in order to hold a private, exclusive opening for local Sloanes.
