The ViewLondon Review
A decent independent Italian restaurant, UNo offers great value for money.
The Venue
UNo is an impressive looking restaurant from the outset. Occupying an entire corner, its open, large windows are flanked by low-hanging blue and yellow canopies, neatly surrounded by a row of black railings covered in pretty foliage. Inside, the ground floor comprises an attractive black granite bar, whilst the dining tables and chairs are simple, and unadorned by white tablecloths and too much flounce. Pretty features include backlit orange fabric on the walls, helping to create a warm ambience, especially in the evening, and add some life to the neat little rows of tables. Private hire areas are also available for larger parties and events.
The Atmosphere
The staff are very professional at UNo, making you feel welcome and looked after from the outset. Restaurant etiquette is observed at all times and the pleasant hum of conversation that hangs over the dining room makes it a good place for business meetings or catching up with friends – you won’t have to shout over loud music to be heard.
The Food
The menu of Italian food is exceptionally well priced, with pasta dishes and pizzas coming in at a tenner and main meals comprising of fish and meat coming in slightly higher at the £15 mark. The risotto ai porcini e gorgonzola (£10.75) vegetarian option comes highly recommended. The risotto is just the right consistency, with a pleasant creaminess counteracted by the earthy porcini mushrooms and strong gorgonzola cheese, which complements the dish rather than overpowering it – so often the problem with gorgonzola dishes. Alternatively, a simple taglietelle in a Bolognaise sauce may sound a little unadventurous but is actually packed full of flavour, being perfectly seasoned and benefiting from a rich tomato sauce that balances well against the fresh pasta. The portions are good too, so you can dine on the cheap by just having a main meal if you’re watching those all-important pennies.
The Drink
Wine is the drink of choice at UNo and the selection is good, with an especially excellent choice available by the glass. Of course, being an Italian restaurant the skew is almost exclusively towards Italian bottles, divided by region and well described.
The Last Word
UNo makes a pleasant change from the plethora of chain restaurants that cover the surrounding area and is competitive both in terms of price and quality.
