The ViewLondon Review
An extraordinary site in the East End, Wapping Food is housed within a converted hydraulic power station and is theatrical in its approach to both food and the arts.
The Venue
Wapping Food, brainchild of director Jules Wright, ambitiously straddles the art and dining world. Primarily a host for contemporary exhibitions and more recently, a season of classic films, the restaurant sits amidst the installations. The old industrial turbines which used to power safety curtains in the West End in the 1800s, rise unapologetically from the floor next to clean lined modernist tables and chairs, almost canteen-esque in design.
The Atmosphere
Labelled as a hangout for the intellectual tribe, Wapping locals, media types and escaping Canary Wharfers descend upon this confident space. Deserving of large parties, the lofty room comes into its own when filled with people - dinner a deux is best booked for late evening unless you’re willing to hear the echo of your own voice. The staff are friendly enough, and it is not unusual to find yourself chatting to the hands-on Wright.
The Food
You’ll be hard-pressed to find dishes that you dislike on the wholesome yet fashionable menu. The food is predominantly Modern European, although there are hints of the Australian with the likes of chargrilled new season lamb, tiger prawns, asparagus and saffron aioli in the summer months. However, whilst ambitious, the food can be hit and miss in its boldness. Sometimes superb, sometimes heavy, the fodder does not come cheap. With the set dinner coming in at over £40 a head, this is hardly fare for a casual night out.
The Drink
The food may be internationally varied, but the drink is unequivocally Antipodean. A well chosen and wide selection of wines from Australia has a middling price range – the most expensive coming in at just under £100 is a handpicked Riesling hailing from South Australia.
The Last Word
Wapping Food is a cutting edge and convivial restaurant where you can enjoy a slice of culture along with a slice of strawberry and passion fruit tart.
