The ViewLondon Review
This glatt kosher Thai restaurant in the depths of North West London delivers a good variety of traditional meat dishes that will need at least a second visit. The VenueSituated in Hendon on Bell Lane, this restaurant is close to Hendon Central with easy access to the North Circular Road. An orange and white facade is matched inside with stucco type walls and tasteful but simple modern decor. The tabletops are made of light woods but the main dining area is a little on the barren side though fortunately this is made up in the extensive menu.
The AtmosphereThis is another popular haunt amongst the local Jewish community who come from all corners of London to have their tastebuds tickled. There’s quite a peaceful ambiance here with lots of young families giving it a lovely family feel. However, it’s not advisable for a quiet meal.
The FoodThere is all the local favourites in there from chopped liver to a dose of traditional chicken soup including a chicken soup mixed with kreplach, a classic meat dumpling with mincemeat inside that’s similar to ravioli in appearance. The Buffalo wings are juicy and lip smacking so much so you may need an extra serviette or two while a traditional Middle Eastern favourite of Memulah hits the spot. This is a well cooked pepper stuffed with rice and mincemeat which has both good flavour and texture.
All mains come with egg fried rice, roast potatoes, which aren’t as crispy as they should be, or chips. The sizzling steak is spicy and the accompanying black pepper sauce packs a punch but this is not the only thing that’s a knockout as the price at around £22 will almost make you want to throw in the towel and ring the bell. The Thai selection offers up some tasty meat dishes covering chicken, lamb and steak. The Ge Ping, five tender strips of lamb, is served in a coconut marinade with steamed rice. The lamb is good quality meat but the marinade is let down due to its overpowering milkiness that spoils the meat.
The White House won’t win any awards for its puddings due to the lack of top notch kosher desserts out there. To finish, choose the apple strudel which is rich and sumptuous. The chocolate cake, however, has a smooth fudge-like consistency but is disappointing.
The DrinkThere is a wide choice of Israeli fruit juices on offer which are a little sweet but nevertheless quench the thirst. Choose from pear, grapefruit and even strawberry and banana. On the wine list there is a big influence from Israel with Baron Herzog and Yarden as the main runners and riders. The Herzog Californian White Zinfandel is both refreshing and light while the Californian Chenin Blanc is a little on the sweet side. There are also some famous Israeli beers to try including Maccabee Beer and a rare alcohol free beer called Malt Star.
The Last WordThe White House pulls in the punters especially in the local community who don’t mind paying over the top prices for dishes that are pretty good on the whole. However the lack of variety and imagination in dessert choice lets down this venue.
