Me and my daughter like to meet once a month in town to catch up. Last month in December we thought we would give the Woodins a try. It was near Christmas and was the only place that was not heaving (strangely enough) We had a very nice waitress unfortunately I did not catch her name. Anyway we had a very pleasant evening and thought we would come back again. On 13 January my daughter and I met up again. As soon as we walked upstairs to the dinning room we was greeted by an elderly man who boomed at us 'ONLY THESE TWO TABLES ARE AVAILABLE' may I add that there were a number of tables available which were not reserved. He then started to shout at a poor waitress telling her to 'SHUT UP, YOU DO NOT KNOW NOTHING!'. I went to the bar to buy a bottle wine my selection from the board was not available so I asked for an alternative that was similar. He quoted a price but once he had tilled it in the wine came up more expensive. I queried it and he started to shout 'THAT IS THE PRICE, YOU PAY!' I paid and decided this time we would not eat there. We finished our drink and asked the waitress who was the man, she was very scared to tell us. We found out that he was the manager and his name is Eddy. Now I realise why the pub is so quiet especially for Friday. We will not be visiting the Woodins again.
What an awful bar! The barman was really rude (I think he might have been the manager as he kept barking at the other members of staff too- oldish, dark haired man). Walked in just to pop to the loo before we got a drink and he yelled out 'THIS TOILET IS ONLY FOR CUSTOMERS!'. Needless to say we didn't bother explaining ourselves and having a drink first whilst we were busting for the loo. The bar also had a really revolting smell. Terrible. What used to be a great bar has turned into a army camp.
The pub had a weird smell, the staff were rude and my beer was warm and watery.
What's happened to the Shades!!!I used to use this pub on a daily basis a few years back.
Everybody in there was great and it had a nice atmosphere.I went in there recently and, my god how it's changed.
Nobody smiled, it was all an effort to get served. The mini Hitler behind the bar was barking at his staff.
I couldn't even take my drink upstairs to get away from him. (You have to eat to go upstairs)
With the amount of competition in the area, you would think they would try to make more of an effort.
I stopped at the Woodin's Shades last Saturday afternoon (29th Nov)for a drink with my partner. While I was waiting to be served I picked a menu up to have a look at the food. When the barmaid came to take my drinks order she took the menu off me and put it back on the pile of menus. I pulled it back out and as she took my money she picked mine and the pile of menus up and moved them away from me. I asked if they were serving food as that was why I was looking, she said they were but did not give me a menu back. My first and last visit to the Woodin's Shade!!!!
For a city pub the prices and selection of beer here is very good. Not a large inside but good atmosphere and the staff are helpful and friendly.
The food is great if you like sausages! Loads of choice and the meals are reasonably priced - my colleague wasn't too impressed with his food but he should have stuck with what the pub do best....
Woodins Shades has been revamped since my last visit and although it’s improved slightly I think there are still a few changes that could be made. Having said that, Woodins Shades is still a fairly enjoyable place to spend a few hours.
