The ViewLondon Review
Wrap It Up is a busy and colourful little sandwich bar opposite Liverpool Street Station serving gourmet-style tortilla and roti fillings from across the globe for the benefit of peckish commuters and ravenous financiers. The VenueWrap It Up is not dissimilar to any fast food venue in that there is a regimented way of doing things. Join the queue and place your order, taking a drink and a dessert with you if you wish, then work your way to the far end of the clinical-looking space to wait for your number to be called. Darting around behind the counter like a colony of ants in brightly-coloured t-shirts, the team of ‘Wrappers’ do their best to provide a friendly and efficient service. Indeed, you shouldn’t be waiting more than a couple of minutes before your number is called. You may feel a little like a sheep being guided through several stages before a shearing, but the quality of the food more than makes up for it.
The AtmosphereWith sandwich bars in this vein, the potential for any kind of ambience is pretty much non-existent despite the very positive colour schemes and fun fonts. Although this bar is located on Bishopsgate ensuring a steady stream of customers, the only place where you can sit and eat your wrap is outside on metal seats which creates two problems. Firstly, you have to consume your lunch in the presence of the Bishopsgate’s lunchtime swarm - sometimes it can be a little disconcerting when people brush by your ear or nudge into your elbow when you’re trying to eat. Secondly, due to every member of the team being incredibly busy with orders and replenishing stock, the tables don’t appear to be cleaned regularly which is also a little off-putting. You may find yourself taking the wrap across the road and perhaps finding a bench in the Liverpool Street business complex.
The FoodHaving got the faults out of the way, praise has to be lavished on the wraps which are quite simply the tastiest and most filling creations available in these here parts. The Mexican burritos are packed with layers of rice and succulent beef which are bursting with flavour and quite simply do the trick of filling that lunchtime hole. The Jerk Chicken Caesar served in a spinach tortilla contains a rewarding and authentic mix of spices and the chicken itself is deliciously tender. There are several other flavours sourced from around the world including a fresh tasting and tantalising Thai Prawn filling, Piri Piri chicken, vegetarian and lamb rotis from the Caribbean and a Lebanese Three Bean Salad option which means the hardest part of the process is actually choosing what you want in the time you’ve got whilst in the queue.
The DrinkA number of non-alcoholic beverages can be found in the refrigerated section along with small but perfectly formed dessert pots containing such delights as banoffee pie and strawberry cheesecake. The more health conscious (and stronger willed) among you may plump for the fruit salad pots available.
The Last WordWrap It Up may not be the most inviting venue but as a lunchtime option in the City, you’d be hard pushed to find a better sandwich bar.
