The ViewLondon Review
A passion for simple yet impressive dining is what makes this award-winning seafood bar and restaurant a real treat to visit.
The Venue
Located a stone’s throw from the bustling food lover’s paradise that is Borough Market, this unique bar and restaurant is a cosy yet sophisticated affair too good to go unnoticed. You’ll find an intimate space inside with an oyster bar along its length, two wooden tables for larger parties and the open kitchen in sight at the back. Low lighting offers a warm glow, and exposed brickwork together with chalkboard menus gives it a quaint and old-fashioned charm.
The Atmosphere
Evening dining is without distraction in this quiet, relaxing restaurant, making the sharing of food and conversation with friends even more of a special occasion. On market days though, you may choose the very pleasant option of soaking up the busy atmosphere by taking a seat outside. The staff are all helpful, knowledgeable and approachable and ever ready with recommendations from the venue's extensive menu.
The Food
Oysters take pride of place on their own specialised menu and there's a vast list to choose from, all sourced from top producers around the British Isles and France. Take your pick from Wild Colchester Rocks, Duchy Natives and more (all priced around the £13 for six or £22 for 12 mark), or if the choice is too much, you can try a selection of rocks and natives. There are also exciting variations on offer, including ‘New Orleans’ deep fried with tartar sauce and ‘Japanese’ with wasabi, soy and ginger.
If oysters aren’t your thing, there’s also a second menu full of mouthwatering seafood dishes. Choose from starters such as meaty shell-on Atlantic prawns that are served by the half pint with a rich mayonnaise dip. They have a lovely fresh flavour with a satisfyingly firm bite. Or you can try classic Oyster Rockefeller, with their distinctive salty flavour and famous green sauce of spinach, butter and breadcrumbs. Starters are priced at £7-£12.
Continue your meal with an individual smoked haddock and salmon pie baked with crunchy breadcrumbs, huge chunks of fresh fish and a creamy white sauce, or pick the attractive dish of razor clams and chickpeas with the spicy heat of chorizo. Other dishes include beef, Guinness and oyster pie, and Helford River dressed crab, all priced at between £6 and £30. All fish and shellfish are provided by sustainable stocks and sourced from small Cornish day boats as much as possible, with the shellfish sourced directly from the restaurant’s Duchy Oyster Farm.
Make sure you make room for dessert as it will make the perfect end to your night. If you haven’t got a sweet tooth then go savoury with a plate of three cheeses and oat biscuits (£9.50). Alternatively you may prefer chocolate and Cointreau truffles (four for £4.25) which are soft and rich, with a dusting of bitter cocoa powder that complements the sweet chocolate perfectly.
The Drink
You can celebrate a special occasion with oysters and fine Champagne (around £40) or a very decent Prosecco at £32. Or you can pick from a wide selection of white, rose and red wines, including Pinot Noirs, Riojas, or a very good dry Saint-Veran (£28 - £43). There are also house wines served by the half carafe for £12.50, but if you’re struggling to decide, your attentive waiter can assist with recommendations. There are also soft drinks on offer such as fresh apple juice, ginger beer and cola.
