The ViewLondon Review
The Brunswick branch of Yo Sushi is a conveyor belt sushi bar with a difference – there are comfortable banquettes at every table. So instead of sitting up at the bar you can relax at the table whilst your food whizzes past - all you’ll need to do is stretch across the table and catch your sushi as it goes by.The VenueThis Yo Sushi restaurant is one of the many new positive changes to occur at the new and glamorous Brunswick Centre. Yo Sushi takes its place alongside Waitrose, L.K. Bennett and Carluccio’s to name but a few. All this is just a stone’s throw away from Russell Square and the British Museum.
The AtmosphereThe restaurant is busy at lunch time with some tourists and other people taking a quick lunch after shopping in the centre. Trained sushi specialists briskly make fresh dishes behind the bar, and will put together anything you ask for.
The FoodPlates are colour-coded, with green the least expensive and black and pink the priciest. For the purists there is a wide selection of unadulterated sushi dishes – salmon sashimi, salmon nigiri (with rice), tuna nigiri, squid and yellowtail. All these are delicious when you add slice of pink cured Japanese ginger, green wasabi mustard, which is an acquired taste and clears your sinuses and soy sauce, which are provided at each table.
However if raw fish is not your thing or you want a little variety try the seafood rice dish or pan fried Japanese noodles in mildly tangy spiced sauce. You can also have unlimited miso soup for around £1.75. Another alternative are the seaweed hand rolls, which are made by the chefs in front of you and can be filled with salmon, avocado and sesame seeds with mayonnaise or hand chopped tuna with chili powder and spring onion.
The DrinkUnlimited still and sparkling water provided from fountain taps at each place is available for around £1.00, as is Japanese green tea if you ask for it. A small wine list includes pinot noir and pinot grigio as well as champagne. Particularly recommended as an accompaniment to the sushi is the Japanese Sapporo lager sold in a beautiful large silver can. The classic Japanese drink sake is also available hot and chilled.
The Last WordThe great thing about Yo Sushi is that it is not only tasty but is fun and fast, perfect for a working lunch and very healthy. You can guarantee that won’t feel sleepy and overfull when you head back to the office after lunch.
