The ViewLondon Review
One of London’s finest Japanese fast food restaurants is still going strong. The VenueIf you haven’t been to a YO! Sushi before, slither out from under your rock and start stuffing your face. There are loads of locations across the capital, but even though this is the first YO! Sushi restaurant to have opened it shares the same premise as the other restaurants – cheap, fresh sushi and Japanese delicacies that circle around the restaurant on a giant conveyor belt. For sushi fans, it’s a bit like being a kid on Christmas morning – if gift after gift kept coming out from under the tree.
The AtmosphereAs each separate YO! Sushi venue is designed differently, the crowd can vary considerably. At the Soho restaurant, the decor is minimalist with rows of red cushioned seats surrounding the conveyor belt with the chefs in the middle, hard at work. Media types that work in the area pop in for a quick bite for lunch or after work.
The FoodThe plates at YO! Sushi are colour coded by price. The cheap stuff comes out on green and blue plates, while the more pricey dishes (still only just a fiver) are grey. The food ranges from sushi (including maki, futomaki, nigiri, sashimi and hand rolls) to tempura, curries, soups, salads and noodles. If you get tired of watching the conveyor belt for a particular dish to whizz by, just ask the server and they’ll have the chefs make it up for you. Don’t get carried away though, as the quantity can vary – one plate might have two pieces of nigiri on it, while another plate of the same colour might contain a filling chicken and rice dish.
Don't miss the smoked salmon and cream cheese rolls, crunchy prawn and avocado rolls and the signature YO! rolls, which are made up of salmon, avocado, mayonnaise and tobiko. And although you don't have to eat your food in any particular order, crispy dumplings make perfect starters and mochi - colourful little balls of rice cakes with sweet fillings inside - are a satisfying end to the meal.
The DrinkBeers include Kirin, Asahi and Sapporo, and there’s also a small selection of wines, champagne and hot and cold sake. For £1.00 you can get unlimited still or sparkling water or green tea that’s piped directly to your table.
The Last WordWatching the colourful little plates on the conveyor belt go by in wide eyed wonder is an experience every Londoner should have at least once. If you haven't, put it on your to do list right now.
