The ViewLondon Review
Frozen yoghurt gets personal at Yu-foria – indulge yourself in a sweet but lean treat.
The Venue
Yu-foria oozes style in every direction, hitting the most contemporary of all trends – the environment. The place is located in one of the basement courtyards of Covent Garden Market, where musicians and singers perform throughout the day – you’ll hear plenty of them as you dive into your frozen yoghurt.
Right at the entrance and in the main sitting area, patches of real grass and plants decorate the wall, adding sophistication to a place that already looks good. The historical side of Covent Garden is preserved thanks to the brick walls and stone floors. Furnishings are stylishly green, made of large solid blocks of wood acting as stools and tables. The snug area has been painted green and it has just enough space to accommodate two brilliant cocoon swing chairs, also made from sustainable wood, hanging from the ceiling. This is by far the best spot to wind down from Covent Garden shopping.
The Atmosphere
Yu-foria is surprisingly chic but the atmosphere remains nicely relaxed, with no hassled mothers being dragged in by young children with sugar cravings in sight. In fact, it looks a lot more like a bar at a private spa, where friends chat after a massage session. Not only is the look eco-friendly, but the ethos is, too – Yu-foria not only uses exclusively bio-degradable packaging but it’s also a carbon neutral establishment, calculating their carbon expenditure every quarter – including staff commutes – and offsetting it by planting trees. They’re even planning on become carbon negative, planting trees to cover double the amount of CO2 they consume.
The Food
But back to the main feature, the frozen yoghurt. You’ll be pleased to discover that their ingredients are all natural, the yoghurt is fat free and rich in probiotics and that the fruit is super fresh. You can choose from three sizes (£2.80 - £3.20) and three flavours: natural; chocolate; and the special, which is always a fruit flavour, such as mango, strawberry or blueberry. The toppings (20 pence each) range from pineapple, kiwi, banana, coconut and berries to mint crisp, honeycomb, raisins, pistachios, cookies, white chocolate and granola. During the winter you can expect richer toppings such as roasted chestnuts, applesauce, melted chocolate and espresso.
The natural yoghurt base has a great, smooth consistency and it matches well with both fruit and richer ingredients such as honeycomb and granola. The mango base is very refreshing and divine with fresh fruit, like kiwi and pineapple. Chocolate frozen yoghurt is always tricky, as it often has a strange taste, a weird mix of tangy and sweet. The chocolate at Yu-foria is prepared following a completely different recipe than most frozen yoghurt shops, making it a lot like chocolate ice cream, although a bit less indulgent. Sweet and creamy, the chocolate is good but the natural flavour is still the standout.
The Drink
The highlight in the drink section is definitely the frozen yoghurt smoothie (£4), with the same flavour options as the frozen yoghurt – the only difference is you’ll use a straw rather than a spoon. If you really need something other than frozen yoghurt, you can have a Firefly bottled drink, water or POM pomegranate juice.
The Last Word
Relaxed, quiet and private, Yu-foria offers refreshing frozen yoghurt of the highest quality. Guilt-free indulgence for both your waistline and the planet.
