Run fast! This is the worst yum cha/dim sum I have ever had.

I am forgiving to having to wait continually for service and accept that sometime waiters forget to bring you what you ask for. I can also accept that the kitchen runs out of dishes. However, I cannot cope with rubbish food.

The dumplings were tiny, rubbery and stale, and the vegetables were old and without flavour. In addition the garlic and the oyster sauce were watery. I can honestly say that there was not one redeeming dish out of the 11 that were ordered (only 8 ever arrived). That said you might expect that 8 dishes between two would be a feast, however the size of the dishes were so small and the fillings in the dumplings so insipid that we left to have a panini in the coffee shop up the road. Truly I have never seen such sorry little dumplings!

The sting in the tail of this truly disappointing Valentine's meal was that we paid £35 (no wine), despite leaving hungry and ignored.

This is very odd - I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience, Joan, but are you sure you were at Yum Cha in the Chalk Farm Road?
I have been to this restaurant 7 or 8 times in the last 12 months, after reading a recommendation on the worldfoodie blog, and have never had a bad experience!
I have always found the staff to be friendly, polite and highly efficient - never having to wait more than 5 minutes for a dish to appear!
The food itself I think is some of the best dim sum in London, and exceptionally good value for money.
I adore dim sum and eat it at least once a week, from the Royal China to Shanghai Blues, from Dalston Junction (Shanghai, and well worth the trip!) to the wilds of Docklands. My current favourite is Pearl Liang in Paddington, although Yum Cha is good and the Dragon Castle still has a special place in my heart - especially as I live in South London!
If you like dim sum, or would like to try it somewhere good, but not too expensive, then Yum Cha comes highly recommended!

p.s. I was there on Saturday and am going back for lunch today!

I tried Yum Cha last week for lunch with my friend for the first time and had a bad experience, so I won't be going back again.

The waiter seems indifferent to us and even though the restaurent was empty. I asked for a second menu quite a few times only to be ignored!

The first few dim sum he bought were nice enough, but we had a close call when the last one, which had chicken filling was raw inside. I had taken a bite, so had to spite it out which was not pleasant.

It spoilt all the other dishes and when we mentioned it to the waiter he didn't apologise.

I won't be going back there again. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Table for 2 - every morsel looked and tasted so fresh and 'clean' (rather than oily or heavy). We ordered 3 starters - (1) the spring rolls seemed a bit empty on the first bite but by the 2nd bite I appreciated the subtle and light element. (2) the prawn dim sum - with that sweet/chilli dip - delicious and (3) the amazing prawn sesame toast - I have never experienced them in this style - rolled like a spring roll, with the fresh cooked prawns encased with a light sesame toast. That was a wonderful experience and I will order them again and again and again. My main was a 'mild' thai green prawn curry with boiled rice. Plain boiled rice what can you say? It's boiled and divine with that clean and fresh vibe again. The curry was not as mild as I'd expected but this did not detract from the quality and the goodness. It was JUICY. My friend ate sizzling chicken. Before the waiter arrived with it my friend wondered if it really would be sizzling. It was SOOOOOOOOOO sizzling that the waiter had to move away from the ceiling smoke/heat detector. My friend was most content with his main. I had a refreshing cup of green tea and we shared a bottle of still water and there really is not much I can tell you about still water, except that it was housed inside a super cool bottle - so my friend is going to have it converted into a vase! The total cost was £33.00. It was well worth it.Service was fab, friendly and professional. We even got a guided tour of the karaoke rooms for future reference. I am definitely going to book a celebratory evening there in the near future.I am not very good at describing food and eating but suffice to say this was an exceptional culinary experience for my tastebuds. TASTY.
