The ViewLondon Review
Good bars on the touristy South Bank can be thin on the ground, so Zakudia is a bit of a gem. If you’re in the mood for fabulous cocktails and equally fabulous panoramic views across the Thames, this place is for you.The VenueEnjoy a pre-drink stroll along the river and you’ll soon strike upon Zakudia. Head upstairs to the first floor bar and take in the spectacular views of St Pauls and the City offered by the floor to ceiling windows. The room is relatively small (narrow and long), and unfortunately could do with a bit of a re-vamp – the neutral walls and suede stools are slightly tatty around the edges. But it’s cosy and comfortable, and you’ll be so distracted by the view you won’t care for long.
The AtmosphereThe bar staff are friendly and helpful, and the clientele is a mixture of city workers, local groups and couples, and the odd tourist en route from the nearby Tate Modern. Of an evening the bar is busy but not buzzing. Think more along the lines of a place to enjoy a laid back chat to the sound of gentle jazz, rather than a pre-club venue to get you in the mood for a big night out. However, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays there are live DJs and a lively atmosphere.
The FoodStart with bowls of olives from nearby Borough Market. The menu at Zakudia changes regularly, but small plates are along the lines of meaty, flavoursome scallops (£8), or the Chicken Liver Parfait (£6) - a delicious pate with toasted French bread and a sweet marmalade. Large plates include juicy and delicious burgers and steaks, all reasonably priced from £7-£13.
The DrinksThis is the really good bit – the champagne cocktails (at a bargain basement £6.50) are to die for – especially the bellini, with white peach puree and champagne, or the Pink Lady - fresh strawberry and strawberry liquour topped with champagne. The Martini list is extensive, as are the selection of Zakudia special cocktails with names like The Bridge and Miss Thames.
The Last WordRelaxed and not at all pretentious, with unrivalled views and delicious cocktails, Zakudia is more than worth a visit.
