Famed for their excellent Sunday Roasts and unusual decor, you won’t mind being sent to The Doghouse whilst in Kennington.

The Venue
A quirky pub set on the corner of a busy street, The Doghouse has plenty of outdoor seating, which is a treat for this area where space is at a premium. Inside you’ll find an alternative decor with tie-dye rag rolling on the walls, candles and a real hippy vibe that works well, appearing more Boho-chic than try hard. Upstairs is a shabby chic area where DJs play sets at weekends, adding an interesting dimension to this South London boozer.

The Atmosphere
Trendy rock and indie music plays in the background, marrying the decor and atmosphere perfectly. During the day, The Doghouse has a relaxed feel and you’ll find families often outside on warm sunny days. In the evenings, this changes when a younger crowd descends. There is live music once or twice a week, bringing Glastonbury to Vauxhall. Overall there’s an eclectic feel of hacienda meets student.

The Food
The Doghouse is famous for its pub roasts, which are very popular (be sure to get there early as they regularly sell out). Prices are reasonable with starters from the main menu costing from £5.50 for fried camembert with green salad and raspberry coulis. Mains range from £8 for cod and prawn fishcakes with lime and chilli mayo with salad. An 8oz grilled Scottish sirloin steak with roast tomato, chips and pepper sauce is £11. All puddings are £4 with choices like apple crumble and custard or sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. There are also bar snacks from £2.50 for a selection like marinated olives.

The Drink
There’s a decent selection of draught lager and beer at The Doghouse with Fosters, Kronenbourg, Stowford Press Cider, Grolsh, Black Sheep, Wells Bombardier, Guinness, Leffe, Hoegarden and Becks on tap, and Budweiser, Heineken, Coors Light, Sol and Michelob in bottles.

White wine is from £13.25 for a bottle of Italian Pinot Grigio, rising to £14.45 for a Spanish Rioja. Reds cost from is £13.25 for an Italian Merlot rising to £14.95 for a Californian Zinfandel. Rose is £12.45 for an Italian Sartori. A nice Prosecco is available for £14.95 a bottle and Champagne is £29.95 for Lanson Black Label. All wines have a helpful description on the menu, which makes decision making all the easier.

The Last Word
The Doghouse is a great pub for anyone with a sense of fun. Nothing traditional about this place - but that’s the attraction.
