The brightly painted exterior of Chez Bruce is hard to miss! This attractive, modern European style restaurant is the proud domain of chef-proprietor, Bruce Poole and provides the perfect venue for lingering over a leisurely meal and enjoying the delightful views, overlooking Wandsworth Common. Worth noting, too, is the fact that Chez Bruce is particularly popular with fellow, top London chefs! The nearest tube stations are Clapham South and Balham.
Atmosphere and Décor:
This eaterie is renowned for its relaxing and pleasant ambience. The décor is unpretentious and an air of informality greets you immediately, as you enter the light and airy dining room. An interesting collection of art posters covers the walls and fine wrought-iron chandeliers add a flamboyant touch. Service is friendly and helpful.
Nosh and Drinks:
The cooking, at Chez Bruce, offers a rare combination of down-to-earth, honest fare, presented with great flair and attention to detail. The food is simple, unfussy and very satisfying but also full of surprises. Somehow, Bruce Poole has that knack of using familiar ingredients in novel and interesting ways, to create stunningly different dishes. Starters include the ever-popular charcuterie option, or maybe the beautifully prepared Salt Cod Brandade with Pearly Fish and Chorizo, or even a delicately spiced Squid Salad.
Substantial main courses, such as New Season Spring Lamb with Rosemary and Potato Dauphinoise, Grilled Red Mullet with Chargrilled Tomatoes and Courgettes or Sauté of Beef Fillet with Salsa Verde, all make excellent choices. Desserts are exceptional. Try the Croustade of Apple or the St Émilion au Chocolat. Neither will disappoint! The cheese course is also first class. The comprehensive wine list is presented according to price and starts at around £12.
