Those fortunate enough to get their hands on Frankenstein tickets will be treated to a brand new theatre version of one of literature’s most enduring tales, a classic Romantic tale warning of the folly of a Promethean faith in progress. Danny Boyle’s take on the still pertinent tale of Frankenstein will no doubt draw on influence from both his previous work in theatre, as well as over fifteen years as one of the world’s most prominent film directors.
Frankenstein adapted for the stage
Danny Boyle’s production of Frankenstein promises to be a spectacular one, with the acclaimed director having first conceived theatre show of this kind over a decade ago. The play is set to take place at the National and as well as Danny Boyle taking up directorial duties, it will feature a specially adapted script by celebrated writer, Nick Dear. And with this kind of talent behind it, the National Theatre’s production of Frankenstein promises to be a huge, ambitious and spectacular piece of theatre.
Classic tale
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein boasts hallmarks of both the Gothic and the Romantic movements, telling the well-known story of Frankenstein and the monster he creates in a tale that warns against the hubris of mankind’s unerring faith in technology, progress and the unlimited potential of human achievement. Having been borne from the Industrial Revolution, Frankenstein’s story remains every bit as pertinent as it did in the early nineteenth century.
Danny Boyle
The fact that the National Theatre has enticed Danny Boyle back to the stage is set to ensure that this new version of the Frankenstein tale is one of the biggest theatre events of the year. The British filmmaker is one of the biggest directors in the business, famed for films such as Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Shallow Grave and the Oscar-winning phenomenon, Slumdog Millionaire for which he won an Oscar for Best Director.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller
Not only does Frankenstein boast the directorial skills of Danny Boyle, it also sees two of Britain's finest acting talents taking to the National Theatre stage. Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller will alternate the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature, offering an intriguing twist to what's already set to be one of 2011's real theatre highlights.
