The 10th Serpentine Gallery Pavilion takes up residence at the Serpentine Gallery this summer as the renowned arts venue celebrates its 40th birthday. Having seen nine previous pavilion's erected in the gallery grounds, this is the world's first and most ambitious architectural structure of its kind.

10th Serpentine Gallery Pavilion
The Serpentine has a long tradition of hosting an unusual architectural feature in its gardens, and this year to mark their 40th anniversary the 10th Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is set to be a very special one. Having hosted some of the world's greatest architect's works, this year's commission has been created by world renowned architect Jean Nouvel.

Iconic design
Paying tribute to the traditional and iconic colour of London buses and telephone boxes, the 10th Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is a dramatic construction of metal cantilevers, forming bold geometric shapes and featuring a large awning to protect vistors from the unreliable British summer weather. Designed with a freestanding wall that sits 12 metres above the Serpentine's lawn and constructed at a steep gravity defying angle, this year's pavilion will no doubt be one of the most striking sites in London over the summer.

Pavilion summer events
Creating both indoor and outdoor spaces, the flexible space plays host to several art events over the course of its residence. The annual Park Nights and Marathon will both take place in the 10th Serpentine Gallery Pavilion throughout 2010 and is sure to be a key attraction for any visitors wishing to experience exciting and unusual events.

Maps and heartbeats
Two key exhibitions take place in the 10th Serpentine Gallery Pavilion for 2010, featuring a range of ideas. The Marathon of Maps for the 21st Century sees a collection of artists, scientists and writers present maps based on their experiences of the contemporary world. The pavilion also plays host to the installation Heartbeats by French artist Christian Boltanski, which invites visitors to have their heartbeats recorded to add to the already established collection.

The 10th Serpentine Gallery Pavilion takes place from 10am - 6pm, Saturday 10th July - Wednesday 20th October 2010. Entrance is free.
