Celebrating the contribution to London of all the African nations that have made it their home, the second annual Africa Day at Trafalgar Square takes place over the second May bank holiday this year.

A free one day event that encourages all Londoners from all backgrounds to celebrate and enjoy the cultural richness of the continent, Africa Day at Trafalgar Square is set to be a vibrant and energetic festival of art and music.

Full of the colour and excitement of all the different countries of Africa, Londoners can expect to see arts, music, dance and crafts at the Trafalgar Square event as it is filled with stalls and live performances. Heading the musical lineup for the day is the much acclaimed musicial group, Les Amazones de Guinee who will treat the crowds to some of their fantastic and best known songs.

The all female band Les Amazones de Guinee enjoyed great success back in the sixties and seventies, and now they hope to capture the imagination of a younger crowd with their live performance at Africa Day. Trafalgar Square will no doubt be singing along with their music by the end of their performance, and keen to get hold of their latest and most successful album Wamato.

Bassekou Kouyate, the winner of the BBC Radio 3 awards album of the year, will also be joining Les Amazones to perform some of his fantastic traditional style songs. A player of the ngoni, an ancient lute from West Africa, Kouyate was much praised for his award winning album Segu Blue.

Other artists set to perform alongside the all female group during Africa Day at Trafalgar Square are the likes of the Knadan Bongo Man from Zaire, the Kaago Drummers with their djembe drumming from the Ivory Coast, Busi Ncube from Zimbabwe who sings in six different African languages and the Black Eagle Drummers, and comedian Gina Yashere.

And live music is not all you can hear on Africa Day. Trafalgar Square will also play host to some hot African DJs, with Rita Ray, DJ Kirenga Eric Soul from Afrogroove, and Emmanuel Jal and the Inemo Afrobeat Experience really making the day go with the bang.

Africa Day was launched in 2007 as not only a celebration of the wealth of culture that African imimgrants have brought to London, but Africa Day last year was also part of the Mayors events that marked the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in Britain.

Sure to be a truly vibrant and exciting day for all who attend, Africa Day at Trafalgar Square takes place from 1pm on Bank Holiday Monday 26th May 2008.
