Bringing a riot of colour and music to Central London this October, the African Weekender at Trafalgar Square celebrates 50 years of Nigerian independence and the ties between London and the vast and diverse continent.
Amazing Africa
Starting the two day festival in grand style, the Amazing Africa event aims to transform Trafalgar Square into a melting pot of African culture, with music, dance, drama, food, arts and crafts all in the mix. Regional food traders will also be setting up stalls on the first day of the African Weekender at Trafalgar Square, and offering a range of spicy and aromatic dishes from Africa.
Live music
The lineup of live performances for Amazing Africa during the African Weekender at Trafalgar Square includes traditional dance troupes, the Krar Collective from Ethiopia, Abdul Diop from Senegal and Gambia, and Muntu Valdo from Cameroon. Watch authentic performances and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Africa.
Family event
As well as browsing the food and drink stalls, you can also shop for a variety of arts and crafts stalls on Saturday, including beads, textiles, paintings and carvings. Kids and families are bound to enjoy taking in all the colourful sights and taking in all the sounds and smells.
Nigeria at 50 in Trafalgar Square
Sunday sees the Nigeria at 50 event take over the African Weekender at Trafalgar Square, which celebrates the Golden Jubilee of Nigerian independence with a day packed full of comedy, traditional dance, poetry and music from artists from the UK, USA and Nigeria itself. There will also be stalls set up in the square, selling Nigerian food, drink, arts and crafts.
The African Weekender at Trafalgar Square takes place from Saturday 9th October - Sunday 10th October 2010. Admission is free.
