Celebrate the return of the World Cup with 25 days of football screenings, live music, DJ sets and more at the Afro Cup Festival at Rich Mix, which celebrates the best in African culture.

Football fever
With everything from art and DJ sets to film screenings, the Afro Cup Festival at Rich Mix takes its inspiration from the football World Cup in South Africa, and uses the tournament to explore the food, culture and music of the entire African continent. Produced in collaboration with Russ Jones, also known as the Hackney Globe Trotter, the festival at Rich Mix also celebrates the 50th anniversary of independence for 17 African countries.

Music
Featuring 18 nights of live African music, the Afro Cup Festival at Rich Mix is a must for fans of afrocentric music. Highlights include the Next Stop Soweto and South African Funk Experience album launch parties, as well as live performances from We Are Benin City and Yaaba Funk. With everything from vintage Congolese beats to South African jazz and reggae to African inspired Brazilian samba on the programme, there's bound to be something to inspire you at the festival.

Football screenings
Sure to be a massive draw during the World Cup tournament will be the live screenings of all of the major football games. The matches will be screened live on a 15x10ft screen during the Afro Cup Festival at Rich Mix, which means that you can live every goal, red card, corner and penalty shoot out as though you were in the stadium in South Africa.

African food
To complement all the music, DJ sets and live football screenings, the Rich Mix bar menu is being transformed into one offering authentic African food. Sample all the fragrant, exotic flavours amid a bustling atmosphere as Rich Mix is turned into a football bar-cum-shack, with capacity for up to 500 revellers.

Art exhibitions
Also taking place during the Afro Cup Festival is an art installation on the mezzanine overlooking the bar, which takes place within a recreated bus station and uses photography to explore the life of a street child from Cape Town. There is also a 90ft street art project to see on the hoardings facing Rich Mix, in which young local artists have grappled with the themes of independence, sport, Africa and freedom.

The Afro Cup Festival at Rich Mix takes place from Friday 11th June - Sunday 11th July 2010. All events are free to attend. For more information on the full programme of events click on the link below.
