An exhibition by Ai Weiwei at Lisson Gallery this summer sees the renowned Chinese artist open one of his first solo shows in London, alongside the installation of his animal head zodiac sculptures at Somerset House.

Ai Weiwei at Lisson Gallery
Showcasing a selection of sculptural and video works in his exhibition, the show is a chance for art lovers and fans of the contraversial artist to see some of his works up close and personal. Following on from his massively successful Sunflower Seeds installation at the Tate Modern, which ended earlier this year, Weiwei has gained an international reputation as a conceptual artist to watch.

Artist and critic
Mixing his roles as artist, architect, curator, designer, filmmaker, publisher and social and cultural critic, the exhibition by Ai Weiwei at Lisson Gallery demonstrates his deeply political motivations and the range of his sensibility. Linking to the past, the present, the geopolitical and the economic, his works re-examine the realities of the world with a critical eye. By critiquing both modern society and those who create it, he creates art that comments on the nature of politics and society.

Exhibition highlights
Those who went to see the several million handmade ceramic sunflower seeds at Tate Modern will be keen to examine the works on show by Ai Weiwei at Lisson Gallery. Included in the exhibition are 16 marble chairs, all of which are exactly the same dimension, but vary slightly in look, as each one features different colours and patterns from the natural marble. Also on show is a film installation entitled Second Ring, which shows over an hour's worth of footage from the vast ring road around Bejing. Fans will also be keen to see the neolithic vases which have been dipped into house paint, rendering them multi-coloured, the paint providing a stark contrast with the aged pottery surface.

The exhibition of works by Ai Weiwei at Lisson Gallery takes place from Thursday 13th May - Saturday 16th July 2011. Entrance is free.
