Alex Katz Portraits Exhibition

The Alex Katz Portraits exhibition goes on show at the National Portrait Gallery this summer, and features an unusual addition in the form of a picture of the Editor in Chief at American Vogue, Anna Wintour.

Taking up two rooms at the National Portrait Gallery until the end of September 2010, the Alex Katz Portraits display will certainly be a big draw for fashion and art fans. Showcasing the 82 year old artists work, one of the highlights will no doubt be the picture of the American Vogue editor as she is depicted minus her trademark dark glasses.

The picture of Anna Wintour features in the collection of Alex Katz portraits having been completed just last year. Having seen the editor in the September edition of her magazine, the artist was apparently struck by her eyes, which rarely make an appearance without their sunglasses. In the portrait she is painted without the glasses and on a vivid yellow background, which highlights the sparkle in her eyes.

Exhibition highlights
Alongside the painting of Anna Wintour, one of the major highlights of the Alex Katz Portraits exhibition is the group painting of New York intelligentsia, One Flight Up. Depicted at a cocktails party, the piece has been constructed from painted aluminium cutouts, which portrays the 30 different subjects.

American classic
Alex Katz has been a painter on the American modern art scene for many years now, and is best known for his depictions of people and portraits. Seen as one of the most significant artists of his time, the Alex Katz Portraits exhibition is a great chance for art fans in London to get to see the work of this classic American artist while he is still alive and working.

The Alex Katz Portraits exhibition takes place from 10am - 6pm, Saturday 15th May - Tuesday 21st September 2010 at National Portrait Gallery. Entrance is free.
