A retrospective of Alice in Wonderland at BFI Southbank celebrates the fictional heroine as she makes a return to the big screen in Tim Burton's extravaganza this spring. Looking back at the multitude of cinematic Alices that have gone before, this is your chance to spend two whole weeks living in Wonderland.

Alice in Wonderland at BFI
As Alice in Wonderland 2010 plays at the BFI Southbank's big brother venue the IMAX, the smaller cinema delves back through the film archives to bring you a selection of Alice in Wonderland films from 1933 to 1988. A must see film series for any fans of the Alice genre, the selection also sheds light on just how film directors have attempted to translate the classic children's story onto the silver screen.

Famous faces
As much as the character of Alice is famous, many of the directors and producers that have taken up the mantle are well known and have hundreds of films to their names. Screening as part of the series of Alice in Wonderland at BFI Southbank are works from the likes of Dennis Potter, Jonathan Miller and Jim Henson.

Retrospective highlights
A total of six films feature in the retrospective series of Alice in Wonderland at BFI cinema, all of which bring their own unique take to the story. If you are a series Alice fan then you shouldn't miss a single screening, but for those less obsessive film buffs out there then the 1949 Alice in Wonderland is billed as the most faithful to the original story. Also worth a look is the 1985 version entitled Dreamchild, written by Dennis Potter and featuring a peculiar cast from the Jim Henson workshop.

Special events
As part of the Alice related celebrations Jonathan Miller is introducing his BBC version of Alice in Wonderland from 1966 on Sunday 13th March 2010.
