Alternative Village Fete

Take a trip to the Alternative Village Fete for a splash of twisted country fair style fun. The National Theatre Square will be full of unusual sights and performances as the open space is transformed by artists and theatrical performers into a spectacular interactive event.

Tempting fete
Reinterpreting the traditional British village fete, the Alternative Village Fete sees arts and crafts, games, food and produce stalls, live music and dance transformed into unusual and artistic creations.

Arty event
Taking over the National Theatre Square over the summer bank holiday weekend, Alternative Village Fete antics include contemporary barn dancing, hula hooping, craftmaking and more. Last year, you could take advantage of The Chap Magazine's dressing up box and learn how to doff your hat like a true gent, make the most of a '20s style workout and listen to lyrical storytelling based on London's history and mythology courtesy of London Dreamtime. Even more quirky events and leftfield fun is on the cards once again for the 2011 event.

Get involved
Brought to you by the Home Live Art initiative, there's a whole range of fun filled activities for all ages at this year's event. in 2010, visitors could get involved with Cut a Shine's hill billy communal dance, check out the retro comic tunes from The Hot Potato Syncopaters and take part in rural inspired activities such as barn dancing and feasting at the tea and cake stalls. The 2011 programme promises even more activities to make you feel like skipping off to the countryside for a life down in a field chewing a piece of straw.

Bunting galore
More fun can be had at the Alternative Village Fete with a series of food and horticultural projects to mark the move towards autumn. Feast on candy floss, smoothies and sweet treats and browse the variety of selling stalls where you can stock up on unique crafts and vintage products.

Weekend of activities
Along with dancing, arts and crafts stalls, tips for gents and alternative folk music, the National Theatre's village fete is the only way to enjoy the delights of the village in the city.

The Alternative Village Fete takes place from Sunday 28th August - Monday 29th August 2011. Opening times are 1pm - 5.30pm Sunday and 1pm - 4pm Monday. Admission is free.
