Take a trip to the Alternative Village Fete in July for an afternoon of twisted country fair style fun. The National Theatre square will be full of unusual sights and performances as the open space is transformed by artists and theatrical performers into a spectacular interactive event.

Reinterpretting the traditional British village fete, the Alternative Village Fete will see arts and crafts, games, food and produce stalls, live music and dance transformed into an unusual and artistic creations.

Join the likes of Bob and Roberta Smith, the I Knit London crew, Vauxhall City Farm, the Bollywood Brass Band and the Society of Wonders as they spend the day taking over the National Theatre square with their Alternative Village Fete antics. Bob and Roberta Smith will be hosting an environmentally friendly stall where you can write a letter to your local MP and support Friends of the Earth. I Knit London will be laucnhing their Grreat British Sheep which celebrates wool from Britain and provides beginners with kntting and crochet lessons.

The Fete Encounter is a fantastic opportunity to get all old fashioned with an alternative take on village fete style fun with some ethical bear baiting, traditional country dancing, the Shrug ladies strawberries and cream cart, a bash the rat game, and a tombola, all of which will make you feel like skipping off to the countryside for a lie down in a field chewing a piece of straw.

More fun can be had at the Alternative Village Fete with the Society of Wonders with their unique interpretation of fairground games like Hook the Duck, Mundane Tarot and a chance to take on Margaret from the WI in a game of stare out. You can then sit back and enjoy some Bollywood classics with dance and music from the Bollywood Brass Band, or take a trip down the farm with the Vauxhall City Farm inhabitants, complete with rabbits, ducks, chickens, ferrets and guinea pigs in the petting area.

Feeling hungry? There is plenty of village fete style food to be had with the Marnie Searchwell cake and preserve stall, Crumbs and Doillies cup cakes, Friends of the Earth and Farmaround organics. You can also pig out on popcorn and candyfloss as you take part in all the Alternative Village Fete fun.

Along with gardening tips, vegetable sculpting, an icing workshop, street and folk music, and Morris Dancing, the Alternative Village Fete is the only way to enjoy the delights of the village in the city.
