Anam, a name mashed together from the Gaelic words for “life” and “soul”, offers just that in the heart of Chapel Market, Islington.

The Venue
Anam is a small space set over two floors; it gets full quickly so get in early if you want a table. The burgundy walls and candlelight evokes a cosy ambience and the place feels intimate while still offering a great party atmosphere. With a bar on each floor you have your pick of where to settle and can choose to prop up one of the convenient ledges around the walls or sit at one of the tables, which can be reserved.

The décor seems at first to be quite typical of a London cocktail bar but there are some eye-catching features nonetheless – a retro disco ball hangs overhead and some interesting art pieces mark this bar’s individuality, but one thing's more memorable than anything else – a fish tank which separates the male and female toilets.

The Atmosphere
In such an intimate setting, you almost feel as though you could be at someone’s party and conversation flows thick and fast between attendees, who tend to be in their twenties and thirties.

The Music
With a host of DJs, you will be treated to your favourite party anthems along with a range of club classics to really get the night started, or finished for that matter, as once you’re here you could easily find yourself dancing into the early hours.

The Drink
Cocktails are the business here and the knowledgeable mixologists behind the bar don’t disappoint. With drinks like the Summer Fling (a sweet mix of vanilla vodka, Amaretto, passion fruit and apple juice) and the Adam and Eve (an ice cold mix of fresh blueberries, vodka, peach liqueur, lime juice and a Chambord float) your only problem will be choosing what to try first. Cocktails cost between £7-£8 and the list is ample, however if you fancy something that you don’t see on the menu, don’t be afraid to talk to one of the bar staff.

The bar also carries a small but pleasing wine selection with a chenin blanc for £17 a bottle and a few beers including pints of Becks or a bottle of Peroni (around £4).

The Last Word
With a party soundtrack, delicious cocktails and friendly staff, Anam is a bar that’ll keep you coming back for more.
