Anna Wintour at National Portrait Gallery

A portrait of Anna Wintour at National Portrait Gallery goes on show over the summer this year as part of a larger display by the American artist Alex Katz. Created last year in his New York studio, the painting has now come to London for display at the National Portrait Gallery.

Being displayed for the very first time this painting of Anna Wintour is part of the mini exhibition on show at the gallery, entitled Alex Katz Portraits. Following his exhibition at the Timothy Taylor Gallery in London, this collection of works features the portrait of the American Vogue editor as one of its highlights.

En Vogue
One of the most famous women in fashion, Anna Wintour is the Editor in Chief at American Vogue and is never normally seen without her trademark sunglasses on. In a break with this tradition however, the portrait of Anna Wintour at National Portrait Gallery shows the magazine legend bare-eyed. Shown against a vibrant yellow background, the editor is depicted with a calm expression in her eyes and shiny light brown hair.

Alex Katz Portraits
Part of a larger display of Alex Katz portraits, the painting of Anna Wintour at National Portrait Gallery is bound to be one of the most sought out by visitors to the exhibition. Having worked at Vogue for many years and created a fearsome reputation for herself within the fashion industry, there are bound to be plenty of fashion and art fans keen to see the picture on display in London.

New York artist
Alex Katz painted the Vogue editor in his New York studios where he has lived for much of his 82 years. Having been part of the modern art scene since before the days of Pop Art, his contribution to the artworld is significant to say the least. He emerged onto the art scene during the Abstract Expressionist period and has been one of the most well known American portrait painters of the 20th and 21st centuries ever since.

The painting of Anna Wintour at National Portrait Gallery is on show as part of the Alex Katz Portraits exhibition, taking place from 10am - 6pm, Saturday 15th May - Tuesday 21st September 2010. Entrance is free.
