Taking place as part of the London Architecture Festival 2010, the Architects Build Small Spaces exhibition is an intriguing show that invites visitors to experience the world of architecture first hand. With seven different structures scattered throughout the V&A, this is your chance to get into the minds of the architect through their miniature building designs on location.

Architects Build Small Spaces exhibition
19 different architects were asked to submit their plans for structures that reflect on the nature of retreat and refuge. Seven were chosen and their designs were then translated into full scale architectural installations, pushing the boundaries of their creative designers and the way in which small spaces are percieved. With each building taking on a disctinctly different feel, the exhibition invites you into the world of the architect in a truly unique way.

1:1
Unlike most architecture exhibitions which rely on drawings, plans and maquettes to desrcibe to viewers the architects' dreams, the Architects Build Small Spaces exhibition actually uses full size models, on a 1:1 scale. Here audiences can fully engage with the architects' vision, by enterting and interacting with the building on show. A reading tower by Norwegian architects consists of shelves crammed with books and invites viewers to climb the spiral staircase and retreat into a cocoon to read; and a Japanese designed house on legs invites you to climb into the space barefoot and gaze out over the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries.

Taking over the museum
Even though there are only seven structures on show in the V&A exhibition, they are all too large to exhibit in one room, and so they have been scattered around the museum. Encouraging visitors to wander from one gallery to the next in search of the Architects Build Small Spaces exhibition, each structure is located in a pertinent spot, which adds to the experience intended by the architect. Another Norwegian design is made from Ash trees and is located in the John Madejski Garden, and a series of narrow corridors and claustraphobic spaces from Studio Mumbai is located in the Cast Courts.

The Architects Build Small Spaces exhibition takes place from 10am - 5.45pm Tuesday 15th June - Monday 30th August 2010 at V&A Museum. Entrance is free.
