The Arshile Gorky retrospective exhibition is certain to be one of the biggest exhibitons in London during 2010 as it is the first major exhibition of his work to take place in Europe in the last 20 years.

Arshile Gorky retrospective
A huge contributor to the art world of Abstract Expressionism, Arshile Gorky had a career that spanned 25 years and saw him create a considerable portfolio of work. More than 150 paintings are on show in the Arshile Gorky retrospective exhibition, many of which have never before been seen in public.

Famous friends
During the Second World War, Gorky became involved with the European Surrealists and began to work alongside them. In an anticipation of Abstract Expressionism, his artwork along with that of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko began to emerge as significant and distinctive. As part of the Arshile Gorky retrospective exhibition you can see some of his free flowing art, which used a kind of painting that relied upon the unconscious mind taking control.

A retrospective look
Taking a chronological look at his life and work, the exhibition travels from the 20s through to the forties, when some of his most radical works were concieved. Having been born in Western Armenia and fleeing the masacres in 1915, much of the Arshile Gorky retrospective exhibition focuses on his work about loss of childhood and the emotions behind his exile.

American influcences
Living in America and associating with what would become some of the biggest names in 20th century art, Gorky was hugely influenced not just by American culture by the landscape also. Featuring in the Arshile Gorky retrospective exhibition are several works that depict his love affair with nature, which were inspired by his living in the countryside at the time. Becoming friends with the leading avant garde artists and studying at the Grand Central School of Art, Gorky then went onto not only teach at the famous art school, but to become an acclaimed painter too.

Arshile Gorky: a Retrospective takes place from 10am - 5pm, from Wednesday 10th February 2009 - Monday 3rd May 2010 at Tate Modern.
