Celebrating the passions of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, the Art and Love exhibition is on show at The Queens Gallery, Buckingham Palace in 2010. Highlighting their love of art and their love for each other, Victoria and Albert - Art and Love is set to be a fascinating and sentimental insight into the world of the royal couple.
Art and Love exhibition
London is regularly treated to insights into the Royal Family through the Royal Collection exhibitions, and this year you will be swept along by the romance of a courtly relationship. As both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were great art lovers, the Art and Love exhibition highlights their stunning collection, and in particular the art that was commissioned or given as a gift by one to the other.
Children and animals
Two favourite motifs for the royal couple's art collection were their own family and pets. One of Prince Albert's favourite paintings was of his daughter Princess Victoria in her cot, with his greyhound Eos standing at her feet, which was painted by the famous animal artist William Landseer. Other numerous pictures of the Royal Family are included in the Art and Love exhibition, including several formal portraits by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, who received royal commissions for over two decades.
The music of love
Both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were keen musicians and consequently music played a key part in their marriage, even singing to each other their own compositions. Another highlight of the Art and Love exhibition is a finely decorated Erard piano, which was commissioned by Victoria in 1856. The gilt piano is covered with illustrations of monkeys playing trumpets, tambourines and violins, along with a host of mischievious children, and was only intended for decoration rather than use.
Cutting edge design
As well as visiting the Royal Academy regularly to see works from the latest artists, Victoria and Albert were keen to see good design and new manufacturing techniques brought together. Having commissioned the Great Exhibition of 1851, the royal couple lent many pieces to the exhibition, and Queen Victoria herself spent £4,000 on works of art. Among them was the 352.5 carat Timur Ruby which was set into a necklace by Garrards jewellers and can be seen on show at the Art and Love exhibition.
Victoria and Albert, the Art and Love exhibition London event takes place from 10am - 5.30pm, Friday 19th March - Sunday 5th December 2010 at The Queens Gallery, Buckingham Palace. If you would like to book tickets for this event, click on the link below or phone 020 7766 7301 for more information.
